What is a Poetry Explication? A poetry explication is an essay about a single poem which presents a detailed but concise interpretation of the poem.

How will you write your own poetry explication? Choose a poem. Decide what you think the poem means and why. Ask yourself how the poet’s use of craft enhances meaning. There are no right or wrong answers. When you’re ready to write, your job is to make a case for what you see in the poem. Do NOT read or refer to outside sources containing others’ interpretations of the poem. You may, however, use outside sources to learn about the poet’s life and times. Include a works cited. Also include an appendix with a copy of the poem, lines numbered. (4-5 pages)

What is expected, academically? Write an engaging and well-supported essay explaining and supporting your position. Your essay should unfold clearly and logically and should respect the grammar, usage, and mechanics of standard written English. That said, you will be graded equally in three areas:

Engaging the Reader • Clarity of Expression • Grammar, Usage & Mechanics
