Poem1.docx

DF9

For your next writing assignment, you will be writing a 6-line poem. This poem will be built around repetition.

Here are the rules:

In line 1, 3, 5 YOU MUST USE THE WORD "SHADE." You may not modify this word i.e. you may not add "s" or "ed" to the word. The word may appear anywhere in the line.

In line 2,4, 6 YOU MUST USE THE WORD "RAKE." You may not modify this word i.e. you may not add "s" or "ed" to the word. The word may appear anywhere in the line.

The poem must NOT MAKE ANY SENSE. ANYWHERE. Please review earlier assignment threads for guidance on this matter.

You must use one true rhyme -- a hard rhyme (such as boy and toy) and it must be an end rhyme i.e. it must occur at the very end of the line

You must use one off-rhyme or slant rhyme (such as crate and spit, OR dissolve and save) 2 times. It must also occur at the end of the line. For info on slant rhymes, read this

https://www.litcharts.com/literary-devices-and-terms/slant-rhyme

Example:

religion spatula donkey: collateral mole.

boondoggle wok papa: metonymy hole.

hole and mole are true rhymes, and they occur at the end of the line. Both lines are end stopped. Both lines have medial caesuras also.

You must use 1 metaphor.

You must use 1 simile. Look these terms up if you don't know what they mean.

You must use alliteration at least three times (look up alliteration if you're unsure of what it means): Here are two examples: patty pity. Sacrificial soup.

You must use a minimum of two enjambed lines. Review DF6 if you're unsure what an enjambed or end-stopped line is.

You must use a minimum of two end stopped lines.

Remember both rake and shade can function as nouns and as verbs. This may help.

NOTE:

Because the two words are being re-used continually throughout the poem, it will be harder to deal with. Remember, hearing the same word over and over can be boring. So, you will have to either: 1) try to camouflage the word and make it disappear so I don't notice it 2) highlight the word and make it stick out in a way that I want to hear it again, and again, and again. THIS IS NOT EASY TO DO. YOU WILL HAVE TO THINK ABOUT IT. What are the ways you can make me want to hear a word again? Think about humor, story, and their relation to repetition.

This is not easy to do. You can use rhyme to get me want the returning word. Think about that. You can use other big fat multi syllabic words to distract me with. You can use alliteration to hide the words. There are endless possibilities you can play with.

But you probably can't do something wishy washy or in between. Remember that a word can stick out or disappear in interesting or uninteresting ways. Think about what will make the word you are forced to use interesting.

This is a harder assignment than the previous one. Good luck. Have fun.
