“5 Results of Not Having A Quality Management Plan”

Hi, this is Harry. If I were to ask you is it better to plan in quality or to inspect in quality,

you would likely say, “plan in” and I would agree. Then I wonder, why is it that so few

project managers spend time thinking about quality as they start their projects. Very

rarely do I see project managers actually create a quality management plan. So I’ll

spend just a minute talking about five results when there is no quality management

plan. Let’s begin. Number one, may not meet the needs and expectations of the

sponsor, the stakeholders, and the users. You know, quality is all about the degree to

which the project actually meets the requirements. Number two, corrective action may

be higher, so what happens if we get downstream in the project, we begin to find all

these defects, these quality issues, and now we’ve got rework, and when there’s

rework, there’s adverse impact to the schedule, there’s an adverse impact to the

budget. Number three, the cost of quality after the project. And so, how often do you

say, “We’re in a hurry to get through the project, to deliver something” and we deliver it,

and then lo and behold, the customer begins to find these defects. They’re adversely

impacted. There may be warranty issues there. Number four, makes communication

more challenging. Imagine we’re looking at the requirements document and we see

this requirement and it is ambiguous. That is, it might be interpreted in multiple ways.

We have a communication issue. What if we’re looking at the requirements document

and we have two requirements but they conflict, one with another. Again, we have a

communication issue. And number five, team morale may suffer. No, I don’t know any

team members that really enjoy working late evenings and weekends making up, trying

to catch up from something that we should have done right the first time through, if you

know what I mean. If you would like additional information on quality management,

check out my article on developing a quality management plan, and you can find that

at projectriskcoach.com/qualityplan. This is Harry, and I hope you’re having a great

day.
