The Sustainable Chef

Pledge Assignment

Value 15% of Final Grade

Throughout this course, students will be introduced to many ideas, concepts, heroes, villains, issues and themes on the sustainability journey. After reflecting upon a relevant issue taught in this course students will have the chance to write a statement of intent. (What will you do and why?) This assessment is designed to evaluate your ability transfer what you have learned in the classroom into reality. There are a number of options and examples in the slides and in blackboard in each week. (E.G. La Via Campesina, Fairtrade, Oceanwise, Microplastics, GMOs, Overconsumption)

Assignment:

Choose a relevant issue from topics taught in this course and develop a statement of intent for your future actions related to the chosen issue. (E.g.: Join a CSA, write a letter to a politician, join an organization, take a stand, volunteer, write a pledge (a pledge can be defined as a solemn promise to do something). This assignment should be written between 500-700 words. Enusre you include correctly cited research, organizational websites, pamphlets or other supporting documents that highlight your decision.

1. In a brief introduction, present the relevant issue you have chosen. Explain how it is relevant to the course and themes. (20%)

2. Elaborate on why the chosen topic is significant to you and define your statement of intent. (What is your plan of action?) Provide the research you have done into the topic to demonstrate your critical thinking skills. (30%)

3. Identify the stakeholders and the impact of your choice on them. Based on your decisions and experience, how will this pledge influence your future actions personally and professionally? (30%).

4. Reflect on how this assignment has or will impact your life and future actions. Did you change (opinion, actions, routine)? Was it a chance for you to explore a new concept? Was this assignment an opportunity to address a topic that has always been important to you? (20%)

5. Bonus - Provide examples. (CSA brochure, actual letter to politician, decision) Provide documentation that shows you have taken action towards your pledge. (A copy of a letter sent, pictures of involvement in an event, etc.) 5%
