Well that was kind of horrible! The Wired article, "A Dogfight Renews Concerns About AI's Lethal Potential" painted a scary picture. Rather than focus on the 'Terminator' overtones in the article I wanted to focus on DeepMind, a Google basement project that got way out of control, and the standards for AI responsibility they are pioneering around the world. On their website you can read about how Deep Mind has signed public pledges with other AI industry leaders to ban the use of AI technologies for lethal autonomous weapons. They partner with companies like Google, Open AI, and and the Alan Turing Institute to set the standards for moral AI use, and take public responsibility for the code they create and open source. According to their website: "We help anticipate short and long-term risks, explore ways to prevent these risks from happening, and find ways to address them if they do." Its easy to focus on how scary the future can be but, that can only breed fear. We have to face the future with bright eyes and bushy tails and be ready to overcome the obstacles that we encounter. AI exists. The US government has exploited and prepared it to extents far past what the general public is made aware of. That is a fact of life. What we have control over is being prepared to work together for a better future for everyone.
