Play Observation and Interpretation Paper Directions (DUE 7-12-18 on Brightspace) 100 points

1. Observe one child who is playing: this can be done in a preschool or in another setting (you should know general information about the children playing such as age—the child you observe should be in early childhood; 2-6 years of age)

2. Focus your observations on ONE child in order to make interpretations about their play, and their development (physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development)

·   Use the as a guide AND incorporate the from the in-class observation and interpretations. 


·   Make notes while you are observing about what you saw 


3. Make interpretations about what you observed using the Make-Believe Play article 
and information you have learned and read about in this course.

·   When you are home, review your notes and connect it to you have learned in class and the readings 


·   In your written assignment, you will write what you observed, and will make interpretations about what you observed based on your textbook readings, course materials, and the Make-Believe Play reading (article is on Blackboard). You MUST include the Make-Believe Play reading and relevant developmental models/theories in your written assignment. 
Use the following guideline: 


· -  Look: Describe the environment. For example, is it attractive, inviting. Describe the 
children, staff, and dispositions of each. 


· -  Listen: Listen to dialog, words, songs, tone of voice. 


· -  Connect: Connect your observation with class reading from in particular, Make-Believe 
Play, and the textbook. Also make connections with information from the videos and 
classroom discussions. 


· -  Focus: Focus in on the topic of play. 


· -  Reflect: Integrate connections with developmental models and theories where and when 
relevant.
