Planning sheet for the Evaluation Argument

1. Selected Topic (broad) based on an evaluative question:

-Is environmental conservation to protect animals or national landmarks in the best interest of the American public?

2. Narrowed Topic:

-Conservation of Wolves

3. From your narrowed topic, select a compelling ISSUE:

-Should wolves be protected?

4. Why is your ISSUE problematic?

- When wolves are decreased, the balance of ecosystem gets disturbed and there is no protection against climate change because wolves help in that. Similarly, wolf tourism becomes economic bane.

5. Why is your ISSUE controversial?

- When wolves die, animal like deer and elk can survive. Wolves’ meat can feed more animals than hunting by humans. And when they die, soil becomes fertile.

6. What is your EVALUATION CLAIM?

-Wolves should be preserved by hook or by crook.

7. List BOTH of your EVLAUATIVE CRITERIA:

(1) Ecosystem balance

(2) Endangered species/ Natural beauty/ Economic boon

CONSTRUCTING YOUR ARGUMENT

8. List REASONS why your issue claim Does or Does Not meet CRITERION 1:

· If the number of wolves decreases, elk and deer will increase and the whole cycle of food chain is misbalanced.

9. List REASONS why your issue claim Does or Does Not meet CRITERION 2:

· When wolves are decreased in number, there will be decrement in the natural beauty and as a result, wolves’ tourism will be haywire.

10. Source #1– Citation= Vucetich, John A. Introducing the Wolf SHOULD HUMANS INTERVENE WHEN CLIMATE CHANGE THREATENS AN ISLAND'S ECOLOGY?

a. Introduce the source: This article describes about the existence of wolves in Lake Superior, Isle Royale and in Yellowstone. It tells that the population of wolves has been decreasing in huge number which has a direct and adverse effect on ecosystem and climate change.

b. Quote from the source: “The culprit is climate warming. Ice bridges are already too rare for Isle Royale wolves to mitigate inbreeding on their own. With further warming, the trend will only continue. Without intervention, the present population of wolves is almost certain to vanish from the island, and the species will be unable to recolonize it.”

c. Explain why the quote matters to your evaluation: This quote matters to my evaluation because it provides some sorts of evidence that ecosystem is being degraded due to less number of wolves.

d. What parenthetical citation will you use: (Vucetich 3)

11. Source #2 – Citation=Worrall, Simon. “Why We're So Divided Over Saving Wolves.” National Geographic, National Geographic Society, 11 June 2017, news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/06/wolf-nation-brenda-peterson-wolves/

a. Introduce the source: This article presents two sided views on protection of wolves and animal hunting. It depicts why people have to conserve wolves and following that it shows the reality of the whole world opposing the idea.

b. Quote from the source: “One of the best things you can do is volunteer to take part in the wildlife agencies. They used to be only appointed by the governor but now anyone can apply. I would also join a grass roots organization, like the Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife, or the Natural Resources Defense Council.”

c. Explain why the quote matters to your evaluation: Because this quote tells some ideas to prevent extinction of wolves.

d. What parenthetical citation will you use: (Worrall 7)
