Plagiarism is a large enough problem at the University level that most writing professors-including myself- feel compelled to address the topic directly. Generally speaking, I find that plagiarizers fall into one of the following three categories:
· They know what they're doing, but decide to roll the dice and pray that the professor doesn't discover it.
· They 'think' there might be something a bit unseemly about the method they've chosen to use to compose their paper, but they don't investigate the issue further.
I really don't want to spend a large chunk of this semester kicking your papers back and swinging the sword of academic justice. I don't enjoy it, and I always feel like my time could be better spent. Thus, I require all of my writing students to complete the following plagiarism tutorial. It's an excellent overview of the topic, and I don't think you can pass the accompanying test (and thereby gain access to the completion certificate) if you don't have a firm grasp of what plagiarism is all about. You can find the tutorial at the following link: University of Indiana plagiarism tutorial (Links to an external site.) . (you can choose either the new or old tutorial-- I'm OK with both). Before you can submit a single assignment to me for credit you need to read over this tutorial and complete the test located along the left column of the tutorial site. Once you've completed it download a copy of the completion certificate and upload it into this section. You don't need to sign it, or in any way attach your name to it. Most students choose to save it as a PDF, and that works just fine. Again- I don't accept student work until this has been completed, so you will get zeros for all assignments until this has been done. Believe me when I say that I don't want to take such a hard line stance on this issue. In a perfect world this problem would never come up, and we could simply move on to the meat of the course. But I've run into this problem often enough that I'm convinced we all benefit if everyone in class has a very clear understanding of what plagiarism consists of before we begin class in earnest.
