While we live in societies that many people may consider to be liberalized and free, we cannot negate that the drug menace is still a huge

challenge within most communities. Many societies have experienced challenges resulting from uncontrolled illegal drug use with many

people getting hooked on dangerous drugs that impairs almost all aspects of their lives. Moreover, inefficient drug policies have led to many

people taking advantage of innocent individuals such as school-going children to traffic and even sell dangerous drugs to them. Looking at

the dynamics of American society, one is likely to notice a trend where the issue of drug-related problems has become a problem to almost

all states; while there have been laws regulating, prosecuting, and prohibiting drug use and abuse, there is still the need for the country to

come up with strict measures that will ensure that the problem remains a thing of the past. Controlling the sale, manufacture, distribution,

and use of illegal drugs should be combated with tough laws and penalties, which can only be achieved by establishing tough drug policies.

This policy explores some of the major reasons for the need for these policies by exploring some of the available literature highlighting this

challenge. Why we need Radical Drug Policies? Various studies are on the idea that the nature of most of our societies are made in a way

that enforcing a policy requires drastic measures for people to comply. This aspect may be due to the previous policies which are in still in

place but have never been fully implemented. According to Davis (2017), countries like the United States of America need to develop

stringent drug policies to control the drug menace. Through the article in the Drug Policy Alliance, he highlights that drug policies will bring

four benefits to the public. The first benefit will be on public health and safety. It is obvious knowledge that drugs have negatively impacted

public health and safety; policies will curb activities that seek to distribute dangerous narcotics to the public and eventually tame their use.

Secondly, drug policies are likely to stop mass incarcerations and mass criminalization. Presently the American jails are full of individuals

who are convicted on drug-related problems. Drug policies will curb the popularity of drugs in society, eventually having a long-term effect

on stopping these incarcerations and criminalization. The third reason is that other countries have been successful in enacting drug policies

with positive results. The United States of America also can enact the policies that are likely to be received by the public. The fourth reason

is that many people, such as organizations and human rights groups, already support the enactment of tough policies on drugs. With the

tough policies, the general public will likely support the government towards the implementation. Open Society Foundation (2019) asserts

that there are numerous reasons why contemporary society needs adequate and strict drug reforms in the form of policies. According to the

article, only two policies would be effective in combating the drug menace- decriminalization and regulation. While we fail to address the

long-term consequences of drug-related challenges in society, it is important if the society were to follow a different approach in terms of

these two policies. A policy of decriminalization but challenging the culprits with hefty penalties will be effective in tackling the problem. On

the other hand, the regulation of drugs on some users may also prove beneficial rather than just criminalizing. INCB Report (2013) adds

that coming up with effective drug policies will prevent numerous economic consequences. The article argues that from the numerous

cases of drug abuse and uses, the country gets to lose a lot in terms of combating these challenges. Some of the economic consequences

mentioned include spending on the medical care of the patients admitted for various reasons such as recovery process and other drug-

related occurrences such as patients from drunk driving accidents and even children from families affected by the drug menace. Eurofins

(2018) adds that drug policies should be effectively be enacted in various work environments to safeguard against certain aspects of the

work environment. The article highlights that a company with strict drug and alcohol policies stands to benefit from certain advantages such

as a guarantee of workplace safety, improved quality of work, reduced damage to reputation, and reduced staffing costs from issues such

as employee getting absent or dismissed from work. A Different Approach to Drug Policies While we may be held up with the idea that

radical policies are highly needed in enforcing drug policies, some studies seem to suggest that it is time the government, organizations and

companies try different approaches to enforce drug policies. Ferreira (2017) asserts that with strategic radical drug policies, society and

country stand to immensely reduce various vices. She points an example of Portugal, which decriminalized all drugs in 2001. With this

policy, the country has benefited through its long-term effect, leading to reduced crime rates, reduced drug overdoses, reduced drug-related

crimes, and reduced HIV infection rates. The article highlights that countries need to consider their stance on how they come up with drug

policies. She believes that enacting a drug policy should be a consultative initiative that involves almost all stakeholders likely to be affected

by the drug menace. Global Commission on Drug Policies (2014) explores if indeed the drug policies do work. A research article highlights

that the war on drugs has failed, and it is time to adopt new ideas and measures. These new ideas and measures should include

safeguarding the general health of the society, strengthening security, and looking into matters to do with human rights before enacting any

policy. By observing these important issues, it becomes crucial for a nation to address policy by considering all aspects of the community.
