The purpose of this supplemental lesson is to focus on what to think about to define your scope.
Remember as you begin each week’s assignment, that the document you are updating will be a project document that tells any reader what you are accomplishing and delivering with your project. Each section builds upon the previous. For scope, you will want to review your deliverables to see what you will be providing within the project, then, you build out your scope statement.

In order to get started on scope, let’s talk about the various components. We have the scope statement, acceptance criteria, boundaries, constraints and we will be needing the change plan approach.
You may be thinking to yourself, there seems to be redundancy between the project introduction, project charter, business case and scope. There is overlap. Each one builds on the next step. The reason that the steps are so important is to ensure that everyone that is involved in the project and those that are not involved understand what you are going to deliver. Each of these steps further defines the delivery and scope.

For scope, you will want to review your deliverables to see what you will be providing within the project, then, you build out your scope statement. Remember from the lectures, you now have defined your project and what you expect to deliver with the requirements for that delivery. From requirements, you can now state what is included in the project.

Acceptance criteria defines how the project success will be measured.

Boundaries define what is outside the scope of the project.

Constraints define the limits of the project or deliverable. You want to define your triple constraints in the constraint section.

Note that the triple constraints have to be managed by you. As you manage them, you have to have a plan for what you will do if you are running into issues. That is what your change plan does for you. I have outlined a very simple approach to the change plan. Key components are – root cause identification, development of alternatives, communication of the issues and alternatives and management approval for the recommended alternative.

For the WBS think about what it will take to complete a deliverable. What are
the activities that you have to take to deliver? I have included a sample WBS
in the Assignment Folder for you to use as a guide.
