Explain the importance of IT infrastructure in physical security
Physical security is often overlooked by various organizations when it comes to promoting adequate information security. Physical security is characterized by technical and administrative elements, and organizations take it as a second thought by focusing more on the technology-oriented security countermeasures relevant in promoting safety and privacy (Gigliotti & Jason, 2017). The IT infrastructure can be regarded as the nervous system because it helps to ensure that there is the availability of seamless services to the end-users. IT infrastructure is very significant when it comes to delivering uninterrupted IT services to the uses, thereby increasing the performance of the IT environment. IT infrastructure enables full visibility and control of all the components and assets used to enhance physical security. It allows conducting daily checks and lives monitoring on how the network is performing, an aspect that helps to determine the availability of the servers and the usage trends. Therefore, organizations can be able to prevent physical security issues before they arise.
A well- established IT infrastructure enables the organization to take in place the necessary activities required to guarantee physical security (Goldstein, 2016). One of these things includes ensuring that there are right locks in the server room. The good locks should be accompanied by the relevant policies that require the doors in the server room to be locked when the room is unoccupied. The server room is the most critical aspect of physical security and needs to be prevented from physical access to avoid enormous damage. IT infrastructure management is essential in determining the surveillance of the IT assets, for instance, the authentication system that limits unauthorized access to critical components. At the same time, the IT infrastructure enhances the protection of portable assets such as handheld computers and laptops, which may pose high physical security risks to an organization. The establishment of policies and procedures on how to use these devices helps to increase physical security and protect the stored sensitive information. Besides, the switching, routers, and firewalls are a significant part of the IT infrastructure and are essential in protecting the organization from physical attacks (Roush, 2017).
