Volunteer groups, charitable organizations, churches, and government agencies work to improve the quality of life of homeless people with mental illness and/or substance use disorders.

Regular use of drugs, or even prescribed medications can lead to dependence, addiction, overdose and death.
Some drugs like Heroin can cause overdose and death with one dose.
Sharing needle can expose you to fatal diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis.
Routine drug use can lead to permanent brain alterations, preventing recovery.
Many of those who lack permanent housing suffer from substance abuse or mental health disorders that prevent them from finding safe living conditions.
Approximately 257,000 homeless have a chronic substance abuse issue.
38% of homeless are dependent on alcohol and 26% abuse drugs.
