Research Proposal Jojo Ying Tung Lam

PIC Aim:     To  create  a  discussion  and  portrayal  of  the  political  relationship  between  Hong  Kong   SAR  and  China  through  collaging  photographic  images  and  drawings  for  a  series  of   exhibition  prints.     Objectives:     1.  Clarify  and  know  about  the  political  issues  between  Hong  Kong  SAR  and  China.  Make   discussion  and  compare  about  the  country  system  and  politic  between  Hong  Kong  SAR   and  China.   2.    Research  about  the  history  and  political  relationship  between  Hong  Kong  SAR  and   China:  information  of  both  country’s  systems,  citizenship  and  political  strategies,  the   governments;  the  reason  why  people  are  having  different  comment/opinions/reactions.         3.  Analyse  method/technology  that  artists  use  in  their  artworks  which  are  affective  to       people  and  strongly  projects  their  topic  of  political  ideas,  such  as  taking  photos,  using   Photoshop,  collage  and  hand  drawing.                               4.    Looking  at  artist/  graphic  designers  who  uses  collage.                                   5.  Research  about  documentary  photography  of  still  life  which  has  social  content.       Methods:     1.   Read  books  about  Look  at  artists  whose  artworks  are  affective  to  people  about  politic

of  different  countries;  having  strong  connection  and  narrative  which  portrays  the   political  issues  of  their  countries  (4-‐5  hours  to  meet  object  1).

2.   Visit  websites  and  look  at  artists/  graphic  designers  about  how  they  apply  drawings

and  Photoshop  techniques  to  create  collage  and  constructed  images  (4-‐5  hours  to   object  2,  3  and  4).

3.   Browse  around  the  library,  find  books  about  documentary  photography  of  still  life,  to

gain  idea  of  how  documentary  photography  reminds  us  about  memories  and  how  to   link  it  to  social  content  (4-‐5  hours  to  meet  object  5).

4.   Watch  videos/  interview  of  political  artists  that  their  artworks  are  being  published.  Aim

to  gain  knowledge  about  the  political  issues  and  history  in  relation  to  China  politics;

also  to  understand  the  mentality  and  thoughts  from  the  artists  and  the  reason  why   they  publish  political  arts  (4-‐5  hours  to  meet  object  2  and  3).

Method  and  Strategies     A  research  strategy  that  particularly  appealed  to  me  during  the  guest  speakers’  talk  in   research  symposium  was  to  insight  the  environment  and  daily  objects  which  are   engaged  with  the  history  and  personal  rituals  by  reading  books,  browsing  the  internet   and  visiting  the  locations.  Chris  Corson-‐‑Scott  and  Julian  Hooper  employed  these   strategies  whilst  in  the  process  of  their  projects.  Chris  Scott  produces  quiet,  lyrical,   many-‐‑layered  images  of  deeply  personal  and  intimate  subjects;  Julian  Hooper’s  work  is   engaged  to  his  ancestral  history.  Their  works  are  elusive  and  high  quality.       Corson-‐‑  Scott  believes  the  combination  results  in  a  more  ‘human’  image  such  as  finely   detailed,  yet  softer,  richer,  and  ultimately  closer  to  how  our  eyes  see  light  than  digital   capture.    He  rarely  takes  more  than  a  single  image  of  a  subject,  also  stimulate  a  deeply   thoughtful  ponder  approach  to  image  making;  spends  days  and  years  to  take  the  final   consideration  of  exposure  and  condition.  His  work  has  strong  engagement  with  the   history.    Scott  mostly  takes  photos  of  daily  objects  and  locations;  there  are  so  much   change  of  the  locations  due  to  construction  and  technology  progress.  Technologies   emerged  that  fundamentally  altered  the  way  we  do  things,  the  methods  by  which  we   gather  and  disseminate  information,  and  how  we  communicate.       Julian  Hooper  is  a  New  Zealand  born  painter  whose  work  is  strongly  engaged  with  the   history.  Hooper  said  he  has  a  keen  sense  of  his  ancestral  history,  yet  also  a  sense  that  he   has  opportunity  to  work  it  out  for  himself,  to  make  discussion,  argument  to  create  his   art  works.  The  recombinant  nature  of  his  paintings  are  like  historical  fiction  and   collages  which  details  an  eclectic  and  imaginative  visual  language  that  delves  into  his   personal  ancestry. The  historical  record  hummed  away  in  the  background,  but  the   images  were  imaginary  and  slightly  fantastical.       Internet  is  a  research  method  for  Hooper  such  as  a  huge  image  databank  as  well   libraries;  he  sweeps  through  both  those  territories  looking  for  elements  that  he  could   use.  He  does  quick  pen  drawings  that  record  some  of  these  things  he  could  see  but  also   rehash  them  with  other  elements  in  order  to  use  them  in  image  making.  He  reviews  his   sketches,  goes  back  and  discover  in  them  drawings  that  weren’t  successful.  However,   when  Hooper  reviews  his  drawings  he  could  see  what  he  could  actually  do  with  them   and  improve;  It  allows  Hooper  to  very  quickly  and  rigorously  process  imagery.     The  research  methods  that  I  identified  in  my  current  research  proposal  are  successfully   influenced  to  my  project,  exploring  and  identifying  the  topic  of  my  project  politics  with   the  genre  documentary,  stage  and  political  photography.  I  intend  to  work  on  Photoshop   to  create  constructed  narrative  images  according  to  the  politics  between  Hong  Kong  and   China.  The  old  images  I  took  of  Hong  Kong  would  be  used  as  the  background  as   documentary.  This  could  like  Julian  Hooper’s’  work,  combining  different  elements  to   engaged  with  the  history,  create  historical  fiction  and  collage.  This  aims  to  gain  a  better   understanding  of  the  concept  behind  the  images  and  telling  stories  of  politics  to  meet   the  objectives  of  my  topic.  These  methods  are  allowing  me  to  produce  work  in  a  more   creative  and  faster  process.

The  research  method  I  have  employed  is  to  read  books,  articles  and  browse  the  internet   about  political  art,  Chinese  culture  and  history.  This  is  to  gain  knowledge  about  the   politics,  reason  of  now  days’  changes  and  people’s  thought;  in  which  way,  how  art   engage  with  the  political  history  and  background;  also  to  make  discussion  through  the   images.         The  research  strategies,  to  visit  the  locations  and  insight  the  environment  would  be   adopted  from  my  current  plan.  As  my  condition  does  not  allow  me  to  be  there  taking   photos  in  Hong  Kong,  yet  I  cannot  insight  the  actual  environment.  I  can  only  do  research   through  books  and  internet.

Political Photography -Read books about Look at artists whose artworks are affective to people about politic of different countries; having strong connection and narrative which portrays the political issues of their countries.

-Visit websites and look at artists/ graphic designers about how they apply drawings and Photoshop techniques to create collage and constructed images. - Watch videos/ interview of political artists that their artworks are being published. Aim to gain knowledge about the political issues and history in relation to China politics; also to understand the mentality and thoughts from the artists and the reason why they publish political arts. Fig 1.

The  book  Art  is  trash  produced  by  Spanish   artist  Francisco  de  Pájaro  aims  to  critique   a  society  that  is  always  looking  for   perfection.  His  use  of  rubbish-‐‑the  by-‐‑ product  of  our  consumerist  society  as  the   canvas  for  his  art  makes  us  look  at  what   we  so  desperately  want  to  ignore  and   holds  a  mirror  up  to  us  and  our  habits   such  as  reflection  of  the  society  and   human  beings.  “The  beauty  is  there  but   there  are  also  ugly  things  that  are  part  of   our  environment,”  Pajaro  says     (Preskey,  Natasha.  "Francisco  De  Pajaro:   Meet  The  Street  Artist  Proving  Modern  Art   Isn't  A".  The  Independent.  N.p.,  2014.  Web.   29  Apr.  2016.)

Francisco  uses  old  mattresses,  boxes  and  bin  bags  to  create  his  creation  on  Europe’s  street;  using   everything  from  kebab  cartons  to  discarded  refrigerators,  Francisco  is  impresses  with  his   spontaneous  sculptures-‐‑  all  marked  with  the  tag  ‘Art  is  Trash’.  By  making  art  out  of  garbage  and   unwanted  items  that  people  have  left  over  on  the  street,  Francisco  aims  to  critique  a  society  that  is   always  looking  for  perfection  but  we  forget  there  is  also  ugly  things  and  darkness  that  are  part  of   our  environment.

Fig 2.

Pajaro’s  art  is  unique  in  his  own  way  to  portray  the  society,  humanity  and  politic  issues.  As  Pajaro   uses  rubbish  as  art  and  also  portrays  humanity  and  social  problems  in  a  negative  way;  the  artists   are  not  precious  about  his  creation,  Pajaro  doesn’t  get  any  appreciation  and  commendation  from   other  artists.       Pajaro  has  chosen  to  work  in  the  heart  of  the  city,  he  also  has  a  message  for  the  bankers  working   nearby.  Pajaro  describes  his  creations  as  “a  little  present  to  put  a  little  bit  of  colour  into  the  city”.   He  describes  his  characters  as  “hurt,  humiliated  and  ignored  by  society”.  Who  are  “seeking  justice   and  a  less  selfish  world”     “I  present  the  working  class  as  a  united  force  in  the  fight  against  the  oppressors  in  the  capitalist   system,”  Pajaro  says  (Preskey,  Natasha.  "Francisco  De  Pajaro:  Meet  The  Street  Artist  Proving   Modern  Art  Isn't  A".  The  Independent.  N.p.,  2014.  Web.  29  Apr.  2016.).     In  my  point  of  view,  Pajaro’s  work  is  a  direct  expression  of  mind,  reflection  of  the  reality;  the  voice   of  people  who  can’t  be  heard;  sadness  of  the  society,  humanity,  mentality,  politic  system…etc.

Art  is  Trash  is  a  constant  yet  ephemeral   cry  of  despair  against  human  stupidity.   The  trash  is  the  ideal  place  for  painting,   and  it  is  where  I  get  my  inspiration.  I  paint   against  uninhibited  capitalism,  greed,   vanity  and  selfishness.  I  feel  like  myself   living  in  an  era  and  a  system  that  I  don’t  fit   in  with  because  it  is  so  far  from  my  ideas.   At  the  same  time,  my  strength,  my   weakness  and  my  soul  are  those  of  a   warrior  who  fights  with  the  power  of   panting,  my  weapon  of  self-‐‑defence.

Fig 3. My  work  is  dedicated  to  the  indigenous  peoples  of  the  Americas,  my  heroes;  they  have   been  deceived,  massacred  and  murdered  and,  in  the  twenty-‐‑  first  century,  abandoned   and  humiliated.  Art  is  Trash  is  a  rebellion  against  all  of  you,  and  against  those  who  look   the  other  way,  who  walk  with  their  eyes  trained  on  their  mobile  phone  and  prefer  to   look  at  fashion  store  window  displays  or  admire  the  aberrant  constructions  of  big  cities.   Art  is  Trash  is  an  act  of  disobedience  against  all  the  adversities  that  my  eyes  see  and  my   mind  understands  I  use  so-‐‑  called  “art”  as  an  anti-‐‑aesthetic  weapon  of  mass  destruction   against  the  human  savagery,  ignorance  and  social  intolerance  of  this  established  and   devastating  human  progress.  In  the  street,  my  main  intention  is  to  paint  badly  and   quickly,  so  that  the  visual  venom  is  lethal  to  all  the  people  who  feel  implicated  by  it-‐‑ including  self-‐‑important  artists  who  don’t’  paint  or  say  anything  and  territorial  and   possessive  urban  taggers  (P.34  Francisco de Pájaro, and Thomas Corkett. Art Is Trash. Print.)

Fig 4.

Pajaro uses simple comic illustration and animation as the elements for his project Art is Trash. The elements are originally from Dali and Picasso in Art in Trash’s style, blended with eighties Spanish comics ( Mortadelo and Filemon) ( p.8 Francisco de Pájaro, and Thomas Corkett. Art Is Trash. Print.). comment:

I  really  like  his  work  as  it  has  a  strong  connection  and   significant  to  social  problems  of  current  society  and   the  installation  with  hand  drawing  is  very  creative.  I   also  like  his  attitude  that  he  is  making  his  own  work   that  although  not  everyone  would  appreciate  or  like   but  he  still  being  proud  to  say  he  knows  what  he  is   doing  and  ‘seeking  justice  and  a  less  selfish  world’.  The   humiliation  of  the  society  by  painting  on  trash  to   create  characters  is  a  good/unique  idea  to  portray  the   dark  side  of  the  world/society/government;  in  my   opinion,  take  humiliation  as  a  good  idea  and  it  works   for  political  art.

Fig1.

Fig  2.

Ai  Weiwei  ‘s  artworks  are  the  most  outspoken  domestic  critic.  Against  a  backdrop  of   strict  censorship  and  an  unresponsive  legal  system,  Ai  expresses  himself  and  organizes   people  through  art  and  social  media.  In  response,  Chinese  authorities  have  shut  down   his  blog,  beat  him  up,  bulldozed  his  newly  built  studio,  and  held  him  in  secret  detention.

Ai  Weiwei  is  a  Chinese  contemporary   artist  who  is  active  in  sculpture,   installation,  architecture,  curating,   photography,  film  and  social,  political  and   cultural  criticism.  Ai Weiwei had a lawsuit due to his free speech which is against Chinese Communist Party. Recently, Ai Weiwei was ranked the third place the U.S. Time magazine Person of the Year award.

Ai  Weiwei  has  been  living  in  U.S  from  1981  to  1993  then  returned  back  to  China.  Due  to  the   China’s  strategic  position  in  the  world,  especially  the  rapid  rise  of  China  recently,  Ai  Weiwei  and   other  followers  are  the  sources  from  the  value  of  western  politics.  In  another  word,  they  are   beneficial  from  the  rise  of  China  (Hong,  2011).  Indeed,  just  like  the  people  from  the  mainstream   society,  they  get  different  rewards  or  welfares  from  the  opening  up,  those  dissidents  are  also   facing  the  same  problem.  But  Ai  Weiwei  is  the  one  who  is  the  most  envious  in  the  dissidents.  In   the  few  months  of  arrested,  Ai  became  the  big  celebrity  suddenly  all  over  the  world,  both  his   reputation  and  art  works  are  increased  rapidly.  The  days  he  was  arrested  in  the  jail  become  the   valuable  resources  that  can  be  sold  or  stored.

Ai  Weiwei  is  known  as  a   modern  artist  who  does   things  in  a  way  that   everyone  has  no  courage  to   do.  As  China  is  a   Communism  country,  there   is  no  right  to  speak  a  word   which  is  against  the   government.  But  Ai  Weiwei   is  not  scared  of  the  politic   issues  that  bad  things  could   happened  to  him;  instead  he   takes  it  personal,  extreme   and  feel  free  to  speak  the   truth.

     Fig  3.

                         Fig  4.  Screen  shot

  Fig  5.

The  film  Never  Sorry  produced  by  Ai   Weiwei  talks  about  the  inside  story  of  a   dissident  for  the  digital  age  who  inspires   global  audiences  and  blurs  the   boundaires  of  art  and  politics. There  is     paticular  moments,  a  voice  which  is   allow  to  change  the  way  what  people   think  .  He  said  ‘  I  love  the  culture  but  I   want  something  new’.  In  the  film,  there   is  a  scene  about  Sichun  earthquake,  it   has  changed  the  way  I  think  about  things   a  lot;  there  is  no  right  to  conceal  the   truth.    There  was  the  amount  of  5000   students  died  during  the  earthquake

In  the  video,  Ai  Weiwei   has  defined  himself  as   a  artist  who  is  always   looking  for  what  is   possible.  People  called   him  Aishan  and  Ai  God   online  which  is  a  very   dangerous  discruption   in  China.

and they didn’t have to. This news has been shutted down and hided by China government and it is no longer be on local Chinese TV and website; no one is allowed to discuss about it further forced by China government. Ai Weiwei has been telling us the truth that we should not conceal the truth and should have to investigate if there is a shoddy “tofu” architecture construction.

Ai  Weiwei  has  been  facing  the  camera  and   paticipating  in  this  film  in  his  real  identity  as  a   politician  ,he  made  film  of  himself  getting   beated  and  caught  by  police  for  telling  the   truth.  ‘  I  act  brave  because  the  danger  is  really   there.’  said  by  Ai  Weiwei.  This  film  he  made  is   a  true  documentotary  story  of  Sichun   earthquake  and  his  life  about  politic  ,  which  is   a  voice  inside,  speaks  the  truth  to  the  world   about  the  darkside  of  China.

Fig  6.     Ai  Weiwei’s  photography  protays  the  politic  and  Chinese  mentality;    It  is  also  a   humiliation  of  China.  His  work  reflects  the  intense  reality  which  is  illegal  and  not   acceptable  in  China  as  no  one  is  allowed  to  talk  about  any  bad  things  of  China  by  the   government  and  law.       Comment:   Political  art  is  to  protray  something  non  speakable,  the  hiding  truth,  the  blind  side  of  the   world,  voice  from  heart  ,  true  experience  and  opnion.  The  film  Never  Sorry  produced  by   Ai  Weiwei  has  changed  the  way  that  I  think  about  things;  he  inspired  me  to  continue  my   project  and  don’t  be  sorry  to  make  art  about  it.  It  is  important  to  scatch  the  surface,   clarity  the  social  problems  and  politic  issues  between  Hong  Kong  SAR  and  China.  I  will   do  invertigation  with  Hong  Kong  people,  local  China  mainlander  and  foreigner  to   compare  their  knowledge  and  though  about  China.  I  really  like  Ai  Weiwei’s   photographic  idea  in  fig  5  and  fig  6  as  these  images  reflects  deeply  about  the  Chinese   politic  and  mentality.  The  photographic  ideas  of  these  photos  are  in  a  successful  way  to   not  being  serious  but  meaning  deep  in  a  simple,  interesting  way.

Fig  3.  Screen  Shot     Li  Wei’s  Gravity  Defying  Photography  series  talks  about  human  beings,  actions  and  thoughts   are  controlled  by  someone  else  and  unseen  force.  Li  Wei  has  been  studying  oil  painting  in  a   college  of  Beijing  in  1993,  he  left  without  graduating  because  he  thought  college  was  too   traditional.  He  thought  this  is  a  digital  age.  In  this  rapidly  changing  the  world,  he  wanted  to   use  permanent  medium  photography  to  capture  art.  So  his  art  developed  using  both   performance  and  photography  combined.

  Fig  4

Li  Wei  had  gained  international   recognition  with  the  Crash  series.  The   crash  series  is  about  not  belonging  to   earth  but  seeing  earth  from  the  space.   People  rarely  see  this  type  of   photography  that’s  why  they  think  Li   Wei  is  making  a  movie  because  the   project  involves  lots  of  people  and  to   help.  The  most  important  hardware   that  Li  Wei  uses  as  a  method  to  create   images  are  wires;  handing  people  onto   the  sky  or  upside  down.  Then  he  uses   Photoshop  technique  to  get  rid  of  the   wires  in  post.  The  crash  series  has   been  performed  in  Beijing’s  798  art   district.

Fig  5.  Up,  up  and  away:  Li  Wei  that  some  of  the  setups  put  him  in  genuine  danger     This  series  reflects  China’s  breakneck  change  of  pace,  related  to  2004  China  underwent   a  tremendous  change.  At  that  time,  Li  Wei  was  living  in  Beijing  and  he  was  deeply   reflected  by  this  rapid  change  and  he  thought  people  from  the  country  started  migrating   to  cities  with  very  little  living  space.    It  was  a  huge  change  and  strain  on  people’s   perceptions  and  emotions.  People  want  to  break  free  from  these  small  and  confining   spaces.  Li  Wei  had  face  himself  to  the  camera,  use  wires  to  hang  himself  out  of  a  tall   building  because  he  wanted  to  capture  the  feeling  of  wanting  to  break  away.  Li  Wei  said   there  was  important  point  between  reality  and  fantasy;  he  was  trying  to  find  this  point   in  his  art.  He  knows  that  having  a  concept  is  not  enough  and  we  need  to  pay  attention  to   the  detail.  There  is  a  visceral  feeling  and  detail  in  shooting  on  location  that  can’t  be   duplicated  on  a  computer.  However,  Li  Wei  thinks  except  for  using  Photoshop  technique   its  very  important  that  himself  or  ourselves  also  have  to  ‘be  there’  ("Gravity Defying Photography | Li Wei". Colourful  propaganda  posters  have   accompanied  almost  every  event  or   development  that  took  place  in   People’s  Republic  of  China  (PRC)   since  its  founding  in  1949.  These   posters  were  intended  to  mobilize,   inform,  congratulate,  inspire,   instruct,  or  appease  the  people.  The   accessibility  of  the  posters  message   for  the  large  number  of  illiterates  in   China  was  an  important  reason   behind  the  production  of  posters.

The  graphic  idea  of  Chinese   propaganda  art  is  unique.  It  portrays   the  politic  background,  communism   and  history  of  China.  The  graphics   are  telling  stories  which  are  based  on   realism.  Also,  there  are  words   written  on  this  graphic  ‘there  is   nothing  wrong  about  revolution’,  ‘we   are  against  Capitalism’…etc.       The  poster  has  had  an  enormous   visual  impact  on  Chinese  society,  and   this  continues  until  today,  even   though  it  now  lost  ground  to   commercial  advertising  and   television.  A  walk  through  the  poster   gallery  of  the  People’s  Republic  that   history  has  left  us  enables  us  to  get  a   glimpse  of  the  changes  in  how  China   and  its  ruling  Communist  Party   perceived  itself,  and  its  future,  over   the  years.

Fig  3.         Once  the  PRC  was  established  in  1949,   propaganda  art  was  employed  as  one  of  the  major  means  to  provide  examples  of  correct   behavior.  It  gave  a  concrete  expression  to  the  many  different  abstract  policies,  and  the  many   different  grandiose  visions  of  the  future  that  the  Chinese  Communist  Party  proposed  and   entertained  over  the  years.  In  a  country  with  as  many  illiterates  as  China  had  in  the  1940s  and   1950s,  this  method  of  visualizing  abstract  ideas  worked  especially  well  to  educate  the  people.   Propaganda  posters  could  be  produced  cheaply  and  easily.  Because  they  were  widely  available,   they  could  be  seen  everywhere  and  brought  some  color  to  the  otherwise  drab  places  where   most  of  the  people  lived  and  worked:  houses  and  dormitories,  offices  and  factories.  Posters   penetrated  every  level  of  social  organization  and  cohabitation.

                                                                 Fig  4

The  Cultural  Revolution  (文化大革命,  Wenhua   Dageming,  1966-‐‑1976)  was  a  mass  campaign  of   enormous  dimensions.  Aside  from  the  general   revolutionary  high-‐‑tide  that  swept  China,  the   period  was  marked  by  a  large  number  of  sub-‐‑ campaigns.  Indeed,  whenever  the  situation   called  for  a  shift  in  orientation  within  the  larger   framework  of  the  Cultural  Revolution,  this  was   engineered  by  setting  in  motion  a  new   campaign.  Factional  struggles  within  the   leadership  also  functioned  as  catalysts  for   campaigns.   ("Cultural  Revolution  Campaigns  (1966-‐‑1976)".   Chineseposters.net.  N.p.,  2016.  Web.  28  May   2016.)

I’ve  found  Chinese  propaganda   art  is  interesting  in  the  way  that   the  comic  style  graphic  is  trying   to  tell  stories,  history  and  its   also  trying  to  educate  people  in   what  was  considered  right  and   wrong;  it  has  strong  connection   about  China  politic  and  also  a   reflection  about  resident’s   thought  caused  by  the   government.

It  seeks  the  answer  whether  greed,   urbanization,  mechanization  and   detaching  from  the  nature  is   favorable  or  coherent  for  human  or   not.  In  that  sense  natural  act   appears  with  its  all  colors  when  our   emotions  are  paralyzed  in  the  vital   points  of  the  clishe  and  dull  city  life.     Merve  Özaslan  uses  vintage  black   and  white  photos  that  she  blends   with  fragments  of  nature  to  create   visual  stories.  She  fits  the  natural   elements  into  shapes  of  bodies,   windows  and  floors  to  boldly   interrupt  the  old-‐‑fashioned  events   with  modern,  color  components.   Her  images  are  vivid  and  talk  about   the  joys  of  life,  reminding  us  to  live   everyday  to  the  fullest.

Joseba  Elorza  is  a  Spain  sound  technician  who  makes  a  living  with  his  unique  brand   of  digital  collage  and  illustration.  The  Spain-‐‑based  artist  blends  humor,  technology,   science  fiction  and  anonymous  historical  photography  to  create  some  really   splendid  digital  imagery.

In  his  work  he  uses  copy  and   paste  technique  to   de/contextualize  the  general   knowledge,  re/configure  our   senses  and  re/mix  the  known   past  with  the  unknown  future.  His   work  is  showing  collages  of   different  of  different  world,  in   which  everything  seems  to  be   possible.  Also  Joseba  Elorzas   pictures  imply  a  sense  of  ironic   humor  addressed  to  the  society,   showing  ordinary,  well-‐‑known   things  in  a  confusing  new  way.

Fig  4.                                                                                                                                              Fig  5.       Documentary  photography  tells  stories  and  storage  the  history,  moment  and  memory.   There  are  a  few  images  of  Still  Life  taken  to  be  part  of  the  project.  Food  is  very   important  of  culture  and  faith  and  it  shows  people  from  different  ethnicity  are  have   different  everyday  life  although  we  are  living  in  the  same  country.  I  have  found  it   interesting  that  Still  Life  is  just  usual  object  in  daily  life  but  they  could  also  be  a  theme,   and  concept  of  the  story  that  we  are  trying  to  tell.  It  also  gives  us  the  true  value  of  seeing   things  in  reality  either  in  good  way  or  bad  way.  According  to  my  project  talks  about   politics,  pervious  cultural  Still  Life  images  that  I  have  taken  in  Hong  Kong  can  be  used  as   a  theme,  to  give  a  better  understanding  concepts  of  the  story  behind.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Fig  2.

In  the  Spring  of  2009,  John   Gossage  and  Alec  Soth  traveled   together  to  New  Zealand  to  work   on  a  joint  photography  project.     This  publication  represents  the   culmination  of  that  trip.  The  cook   documents  Gossage  and  Soth’s   journey  of  being  in  New  Zealand.   The  images  are  common  of  what   we  see  in  everyday  life  and  it   gives  the  true  value  of  how  New   Zealand  look  like  and  what  they   see  of  New  Zealand.

The  artists  mainly  take  photos   of  the  location,  scenery  and   still  life  that  they  have  deep   impression  about  this  place.   They  give  little  descriptions  of   each  image  in  hand  writing  as   documentary,  which  is  full  of   intimacy.  They  write  about   funny  things  that  they  think  of   and  experienced  when  they   arrived  New  Zealand.

  Fig  3.

Fig  4.                                                                                                                    Fig  5.           I  like  the  idea  that  Gossage  and  Soth  created  this  book  in  a  unique  way  and  it  is  kind  of   honest  of  what  they  see,  their  experience  and  being  there  in  New  Zealand.  Documentary   photography  is  opposite  to  stage  photography,  it  tells  true  story,  experience  and  value   that  everyone  is  different  and  unique.

The  Auckland  Project     showcases  a  playful   attention  to  materials  and   presentation  that  marks  all   Radius  Books  projects.  This   book  is  unique  in  a  way  that   the  concepts  come  from  2   artists  are  being  in  one   book.  The  book  is  a  poster   that  we  need  to  open  it  and   the  journey  is  inside.  Its   double  sided.

My  Work

My  photography  series  talks  about  Hong  Kong  and  China  politics,  it  is  a  historical  fiction   combine  with  stage  photography/constructed  images  and  documentary  photography  as   a  theme.  It  is  focused  on  telling  stories  about  the  politics  and  portraying  the  culture  and   resident’s  thought.  As  my  condition  does  not  allow  me  to  be  there  in  Hong  Kong,   however  the  images  need  to  be  constructed.  The  graphic  idea  of  the  fiction  is  inspired   by  Chinese  Propaganda  posters  which  is  a  symbol  of  communism  and  significant  to  the   politics;  Photoshop  techniques  has  been  applied  as  the  main  method  to  create   constructed  images  in  detail,  this  idea  is  taken  from  the  research  of  collage;  the  pervious   images  of  still  life  and  locations  that  I  took  in  Hong  Kong  are  applied  in  my  project  as   documentary  and  theme,  aim  to  give  a  better  understanding  concepts  in  the  context  of   Hong  Kong  politics.
