Written Assignment 1, Topic 4: Pitcairn Island (Universalism versus Relativism)

Deadline: Monday, January 21st, 10 PM (via Turnitin).

Length: I think it will take about 3 to 4 pages to make a complete, thorough, and convincing argument.

Works Cited: Please provide a Works Cited page (in addition to your essay of 3-4 pages)

Sources: Use at least three sources for the final draft of your response.

Short Prompt:

In 1999, during a visit to Pitcairn Island, Detective Gail Cox, sent on assignment from England, was approached by a 15-year old girl who accused seven men of the island of rape and sexual assault. The men were eventually convicted of rape and related offenses.

Research:

Research the location and history of the Pitcairn Islands, as well as its relation to the United Kingdom. Then research the story mentioned in the prompt. Make sure to get a good sense of the case, its surrounding issues, and the controversy that followed it. You will need to learn about the case and its aftermath, and why many Pitcairners, male and female, supported the men accused of rape. Sources on the case are widely available online.

Writing Topic:

In an essay of about 3-4 pages in length, argue whether the United Kingdom was right to prosecute the men under UK law. Or did the London government unethically impose its values on the Pitcairners? Your response should demonstrate knowledge of both moral universalism and cultural relativism.

You may also consider whether the UK has a legitimate sovereignty over the Pitcairners and why. But this is not a requirement of the essay.
