Sunderland Special Soft Toys Limited is a manufacturer of children’s soft toys (such as pram toys and a range of special edition Teddy Bears) using all UK produced materials.
You are the management team and have called an extraordinary board meeting to decide how to ensure the company can survive. The special meeting has been urgently requested because their main customer, who used to buy 75% of their products for global distribution to specialist toy stores, has gone into liquidation. The purpose of the meeting is to plan and manage a strategy to survive.
Although this situation is serious, the company has enough capital to survive for a year.
Company profile
Sunderland Special Soft Toys Limited has 2 manufacturing sites and related offices. 1 in Scotland with a total of 100 employees and 1 in Sunderland with 150 employees (Head Office where CEO, Financial Director and HR Manager Based). The Scottish office supplies 20% of the 75% of sales to the main customer.
Task 1.
Form a team of at least 4 members and choose a role for your team. You might want to elect a CEO to chair the Board Meeting.
Task 2.
As per your ‘role’ prepare your notes for the board meeting. For example: what are your decisions of what needs to be done for the company to survive? What strategies need to be put in place?
Task 3. Conduct the Board Meeting (next week). This will be peer assessed.
Task 4. Write up the Board Minutes in your own words.
Task 5. Compare the Board Minutes with each other and decide on a final report.
Task 6. Each Management Team will observe the other teams and make notes. Which team is the best and why?
Task 7. Evaluate your performance for your assignment. What went well? What did you not do, that could have helped your decision making and contribution to the Board Meeting? This will be a draft, and the notes will be seen only by you, but make it as detailed as possible, as you will be adding to this later as you work on other tasks and it will be part of the content of your assessment.
