Persuasive Speech with a Visual Aid

***You will follow the same outline structure as the informative speech (introduction, 2 body points, and a conclusion)***

Purpose: A persuasive speech attempts to change the minds, attitudes, or behaviors of immediate audiences. For this speech, persuade us on why your planned career is a good career (e.g. teacher, doctor, nurse, etc.). In other words, why should students decide to go into your planned career they are interested? If you haven’t selected a career, pick one! You may wish to answer the following questions somewhere in your speech/outline: What are the benefits or contributions of your career? What are the chances of getting a job in the next few years? What are the salaries of people in your career?

Develop a persuasive speech outline to submit and present to class. Refer to the sample persuasive speech outline as a template. The outline is below. Include all of the parts for a speech that are used in the sample speech outline. You must use 5 sources for this speech.

Specifically, write a persuasive speech that includes 2 main body points (body paragraphs). The body paragraphs should include strong supporting material and they should be similar in length. The speech outline should include an introduction, the two main body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

A visual aid is required for this speech. You must use 1 or 2 images in a PowerPoint or bring a physical visual, but you must practice to avoid technological failure or distractions. The images should be clearly visible and relevant to your speech. Avoid generic clip art or collage slides (slides with many small pictures). Remember that images can include art, statistics, graphs, or infographics, but they should be directly relevant to your topic.

Important: you must let me know how and when you intend to use or point to the visual IN THE OUTLINE. REFER TO SAMPLE TO SEE HOW YOU SHOULD CUE THE VISUAL AID. Similar to the format for a transition within a speech, you should include a sentence that tells me when you will refer to the visual in brackets. Build in time during the speech to adequately explain the visual and give the audience time to understand what you are showing.

The outline should include full sentences, APA or MLA in-text citations, a References or Works Cited page, and appropriate grammar. Double space your outline. Be prepared to give a 5 minute speech.

Title: Why You Should Buy an Electric Car

General Purpose: To persuade people on why they should get an electric car

Specific Purpose: By the end of the speech, listeners will want to own an electric car

Thesis Statement: I argue that owning an electric car, gives people many advantages.

Introduction

I. Attention Material/Clincher: The first time I drove in an electric car was when I was ten years old. My friend’s dad picked us up from school in his new electric car. When they told me it was electric, I did not fully register what that meant. The second he accelerated, I immediately knew I wanted an electric car when I got older.

II. Tie to the Audience: Nowadays, with work, college, hanging out with friends, etcetera, students need a form of transportation, and an electric vehicle is a clean and efficient mode for travel.

III. Credibility Statement: From owning an electric vehicle and doing research, I have found many reasons why everyone should have an electric car.

IV. Thesis Statement: I argue that owning an electric car, gives people many advantages.

V. Preview: Electrical cars are beneficial in many ways. Therefore, I will share all the reasons of why you should buy an electric car.

A. First, I will state the environmental benefits of owning an electric car.

B. Second, I will mention all the perks an electric car will give you.

[Transition: So how do electric cars help the environment?)

Body

I. First, electric cars are environmentally friendly, unlike gas cars.

A. As opposed to gas powered cars, electric cars decrease the amount of air pollution and smog in the environment.

1. By decreasing the amount of pollution, we can enjoy a clean environment, and provide future generations with this luxury as well.

2. Smog pollution could decrease by thirty-two percent and even up to ninety- nine percent depending on how many people purchase electric cars (Shaw, 2015).

B. Not only do electric cars decease pollution, but they also reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

1. In Germany, if they replace one million gas cars with electric cars, the carbon emissions rate will decrease by forty percent (Fischer and Keating, 2017).

C. Less fossil fuels are used when making electric cars.

1. The materials used in building the electric car is more environmentally friendly because there is no engine or gas tank (Verkade, 2017).

D. Less energy is used for an electric vehicle to travel.

1. For each type of car to travel the same amount of miles, the gas car requires double the amount of energy that an electric car takes to drive that same distance (Verkade, 2017).

[Transition: Now that you know one of the reasons for buying an electric car, I will share more reasons and perks that will make you want an electric car.]

II. Second, there are hundreds of perks with owning an electric car.

A. One benefit of owning an electric car is that you do not have to pay for gas.

1. Since electric cars run on electricity, you will not need to go to the gas station and be exposed to the harmful fumes of gas station inhalation.

2. Plus, it saves you money as you will not need to worry about paying for gas. I have had my electric car for over two years and have only noticed a slight increase in the electricity bill.

3. With an electric car, you have the convenience of charging it at home while you sleep. All you have to do is spend less than one minute plugging it in, and in the morning it is ready for your daily commute.

B. You should buy an electric car because you are not limited to the amount of miles you can travel with it.

1. There are thousands of charging stations throughout the United States.

[In the following visual, you will see the locations of all the charging stations in the U.S (Robe, 2014). The different colors represent the different types of charging stations and the speeds at which your car will charge. For instance, the green marker is the standard charging and the orange is the faster charge. The blue marker with a house on it means that a person is willing to let you use their home charger (25 seconds)].

2. As you saw from the image, an electric car can travel far and wide. When it is running low on mileage, you can take out an app and find the closest charging station. This would be a perfect stop for eating a meal before going on the road again.

C. Another awesome reason you should buy an electric car is because it requires less maintenance.

1. Since electric cars do not have an engine, they do not require tune-ups, smog checks, or oil changes. (Demuro. 2013).

D. Another reason is because of how smooth and quiet they run.

1.Since electric cars do not have an engine, they almost have no sound at all. This is beneficial for the driver, as well as people around you so they are not disrupted by a noisy engine (Biggins, 2017).

F. Having an electric car allows you to park in designated parking spots.

1. Since it is recognized that electric cars help the environment, a way to give back is that there are certain spots (generally the closest spots to a store) that are for electric vehicles only.

[Transition: As you’ve seen, there are many reasons to buy an electric car.]

Conclusion

I. Final review: To conclude, there are two main reasons of why you should own an electric car.

A. First, remember that electric cars are efficient and help the environment.

B. Second, remember the personal benefits of owning an electric car.

II. Tie back to the audience: Once you own your electric car, you will have a better driving experience and save money. An electric car is safe, reliable, and a relaxing way to travel.

III. Concluding remarks/ final clincher: When it was time for me to get my first car, I wanted that same car my friend’s dad picked me up in. So, I own an electric Nissan Leaf and enjoy all the benefits of driving it. I also have peace of mind that I am not polluting the atmosphere and am saving money.
