Persuasive Speech Outline-Components
Your persuasive speech must include the following components. You may organize them in whatever order best suits your topic, as long as you have included all components.
· Introduction: Must start with a persona, emotional story and establish credibility. The last sentence of the introduction must include the solution (tell us what you want us to do, not what you've done -- what you want US to do). (DO NOT say "hi, my name is" or "my speech is about" or "my topic is" or or "hi, guys" or ask a question when you begin talking. Start with the personal story!)
· CTA: Call to action is a specific activity we (the audience) need to do to accomplish the solution. This must be tailored to the audience you are talking to, not to other people. HOW are we the audience going to accomplish the solution? Use persuasive language, not informative. You must have three CTAs. You are trying to appeal to different people watching your speech. An action that might work for one person won't work for another. For example, if you try to convince us to not smoke, some of the people are not smokers (what's their action?), some are smokers (what's their action?), some know people who smoke (what's their action?). VERY IMPORTANT!! The Call To Action must be specific ACTIONS to accomplish the solution.
· Ethics: Reputation and trustworthiness of company, product, or associated expert; inspirational quote from trustworthy/reputable relevant person (must have at least three bullets). This information supports your CTAs.
· Logic: Positive facts and statistics related to company, product, or CTA (must be relevant to audience and must have at least two bullets). Logic is NOT a call to action. Logic used must be positive, not negative. This information supports your CTAs.
· Emotion: Emotional feelings associated with company, product, or CTA (must be relevant to audience, may need more than one, depending on topic). This supports your CTAs. This is not your emotion, it's not about how it makes you feel, it is about the audience's emotion, how it makes the AUDIENCE feel.
· Cost: Should be the only negative in your speech and must be specific to the audience you're talking to. What are we giving up of value? Time, money, energy, sanity, freedom, family, security, health, life, etc. Click the list of values –separate document. There should be a cost for each CTA.
· Reward: What does the audience you're talking to stand do gain? (It is important to direct these at your audience only. For instance, you may say that a reward of adopting from the SPCA is you save an animal's life. But that's a reward for the ANIMAL, not for the audience. What is the audience's reward for saving an animal?) You must have at least two rewards. Refer to the list of values for ideas of what might be considered rewards.
· NOTE: If you use time as a cost or reward, you must be specific with the how the time is being lost or gained. If you use money as a cost or reward, you have to give us the exact amount of money we are losing or gaining.
· Need met: This refers to Maslow's hierarchy of needs - survival, safety, love/belongingness, esteem, achievement. You should have two. See here for examples of relevant needs.**
· Timeliness: How can we do this now? How long will it take or how quickly can it be done? If it's something that will take a while, how do we get satisfaction now while we're waiting on results?
· Proximity: How can you make it easy or convenient for us to do your CTAs? We are pretty lazy people, if it requires too much work or effort, we're less likely to do it.
· Conclusion: Emotional impact statement, repeat the solution, say "thank you."
· References: 3 APA required, NO Wikipedia, if you include yourself, you MUST spell out your name and credentials
**Using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in Persuasion
· Physiological: Earning enough money to pay for basic food, clothing, shelter and medical care. Having safe working conditions.
· Safety/security: earning enough to afford a comfortable standard of living, having pleasant working conditions, having good health insurance and pension plans, understanding the reasons for actions by others, being treated fairly, saving time and money, conserving human and environmental resources.
· Love/belongingness: having friends, working with people you like, cooperating with other people, conforming to group norms, feeling needed, being loyal or patriotic, promoting the welfare of a group you identify with or care about.
· Esteem/recognition: being publicly recognized for achievements, being promoted or gaining authority, having status symbols, having a good personal reputation, having a good professional reputation.
· Self-actualization: using your talents and abilities, finding solutions to problems, serving humanity, self-respect and pride, being the best you can be.
ALL COMPONENTS MUST BE CLEARLY IDENTIFIED IN THE OUTLINE!
