Persuasive Speech Information

Things you Must Do

Speech needs to be 5-7 minutes in length

A visual aid must be used

Monroe’s Motivational Sequence Must be used and clearly evident

6 Sources Must be cited: You must use a statistic, testimony and example

Eye contact must demonstrate looking at various places in the room as if there was an audience

Key Points

Use a STRONG Attention-getter

Say “I am credible to speak on this topic….” and then state some of your sources

In the Body, give verbal cues such as “The problem is…”, “To solve this problem, the solution would be….”, “If we follow this solution….”

Call To Action is Vital

The Call to action is vital and should:

Clearly ask the audience to do something

Be timely in the sense that you ask us to do what you want NOW or in the next week…give a time element

It is best if you can include a visual with your call to action so that we hear what you want us to do and we see what you want us to do.

Make the request easy on the audience such as emailing a sample letter you want them to write or a link to a group you want them to donate money or a petition you want them to sign

Options

You may elect to take a topic that is pro/con in which people would have opposing views.

Or

You may speak on something that is more motivational in nature such as getting us to get more sleep or support a nonprofit.

Remember

This is your showcase speech. It comes in the semester when you can use everything that you have learned about public speaking. It also counts for the most points of any of your assignments.

Select something that matters to you. Have some fun with that topic. This is your moment to shine!
