Assignment 4: Persuasive Paper Part 3: Possible Disadvantages, Answers, with Visuals

Education is an important part of a child's life and it is the right of every child to receive a formal education. The first part of the persuasive paper discussed whether the regulations of home-based schooling should be changed. Home-based schooling involves children being taught at home by their parents, guardians or caregivers where they normally decide the content and the curriculum that they will follow. It is defined as the it consists of planned and supervised instructional and related educational activities, including curriculum and instruction in the basic skills of occupational education, science, mathematics, language, social studies, history, health, reading, writing, spelling, and the development of an appreciation of art and music provided for a number of hours per grade level established for approved private schools. Normally, these homeschooling practices are normally regarded as private schools where they are acceptable to other private and public schools (Ceceri, 2013).

Parents usually prefer these type of schooling due to reasons such as political, religious and also cultural issues. Other parents may be posted to countries far away from home where they may find it difficult to take their children to school. This may be factors that include language barriers where the children have not learned the new language. However, there are regulations where the parents are required to have a certain level of training or an equivalent high school degree. This is not also a viable regulation as it is hard to determine the level of the knowledge base that the parent or guardian may have. These regulations should be changed in order to ensure that the children to get a quality education as those that have been to school (Bhatt, 2012).

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether regulations of homeschooling should be changed or not. The school-at-home suggests that there are regulations and instructions, assignment and also traditional learning. This method of learning is better or worse depending on the approach of the parent and also the level of understanding of the learner. Even if the homeschool should not be like school, there should be regulations that ensure that there is some order and that the learners get the scope of learning.

Homeschooling started in the 1970s when John Holt began arguing that schools have a hostile environment and also oppressive learning methods that do not prepare the students to be compliant methods. He urged the parents to liberate their children from such a system. Children of age’s five to eight started to have homeschooling where the parents would teach them as they felt that it was not good for their adorable kids to be exposed to such a poor learning environment that was even harsh. The parents would hire a tutor or teach the children themselves. However, the law was adjusted so that children would go to school at a certain age but actually, the parents taught their children discreetly to avoid being persecuted. (Batt, 2012).

In the 1980s most of the states had created statutes that governed and guided homeschooling. In the last 20 years, homeschooling has gained a lot of popularity and now the parents are required to register their homeschools as private schools so that the educational regulations such as curriculum are as per the education system.

There are different reasons why homeschooling regulations should be changed which involve making the learning environment effective and efficient learning environment. In the existing regulations, there are no measures to ensure that the regulations are followed. This is based on the assumption that the parents are highly motivated and also that they are working on the value of the integrity ensuring that the learners have attended the required classes. Many parents also prefer to take home based schooling as a way of avoiding prosecutions from the school policies due to the poor attendance of the children. (Staufenberg, 2016). Some of the regulations that should be changed include:

· Regulations involving assessments

The regulations that involve the assessments of the learners should be changed. They should be subjected to similar tests as to the school going children. This will help assess the acquired abilities of the learners through the homeschooling process. This will ensure that there are similar tests to those learners in school. Some parents may decide to make their tests while some may liaise with the local schools to ensure that the children are tested. There should also be a periodic review of the physical and emotional development of the children through inspections where there are designated educational consultants who are able to assess development. This will ensure that the children get not only education but also lifestyle and mannerism education. (Staufenberg, 2016).

· Regulations on minimum requirements

The children who are subjected to homeschooling should have good and convincing reasons. The parents should also be regulated by the requirements of providing homeschooling. The fact that children do not want to go to school due to different reasons such as disparities with the teachers or other students should not be a reason for not attending school. Most of the students prefer homeschooling because of existing changes in public schools with the emergence of digital schools where students are subjected to the online charter and they can access the information they require remotely. However, due to distractions, the children should have someone supervise them as they read. There should be regulations that guide the online charters such as the number of hours that the children spend online (Greenwalt, 2016).

· Legal actions.

These involve the legal actions that should be taken in case the regulations are not followed where the involved parties are subjected to the law and the justice system. There should also be registration of the home schools so that there is the preparation of the assessment and to enable home visitations. (Staufenberg, 2016).

The regulations should include an examination board that examines such learners and ensures that there are rules that are followed during the examination. This examination board will ensure that the examination is similar thus motivating both parties to ensure that learning continues and in the best way. This will ensure that the children are highly competitive in the work environment because they have been subjected to challenges in the form of assessments. (Rich, 2015) there should also be home visitations to assess the environment in which the children are learning into e ensure that they are appropriate and have the necessary resources.

When regulating the minimum requirements, there should be a list of the requirements that the children should have before they can have homeschooling. The parents should also meet the minimum requirements so that they give the learners a good experience that contains learning and not just cares. This can be achieved by ensuring that they attend schooling regularly so that they are able to keep up with the curriculum. They should also be subjected to frequent assessment so that they are tested for their effectiveness. (Staufenberg, 2016). The assessors should also be highly qualified to ensure that

By regulating the minimum requirements, the homeschooling will be available to the most deserving students such as the physically and mentally unfit. These children may be hard to maintain and also learn in a public school. The minimum requirements will ensure that the parents give the best education and also they have qualified to perform the teaching. This is because some of the parents would love to provide homeschooling due to the fact that they would not love their kids to get hurt or be brainwashed at the school by the teachers or other students. By having an examination board that will ensure a common examination for homeschoolers, the children will not only be assessed fairly but they will also receive support from the government through the examination and evaluation resources (Greenwalt, 2016).

By providing legal action, it will warn the parents into subjecting the children into abusive environments and also violations of the children’s rights to education. Homeschooling is important in cases of children who have low focus and concentration. Homeschooling also allows the children to enhance their abilities and talents thus they have the wide range of skills. It is also easy to demonstrate as there are many objects that can be used as teaching aids by the parents and the tutors. This gives the child a chance to learn using real-life experience and also to understand what is in the books and relate them to current situations. (Romensky, 2017).

Most of the homeschooling curriculums are not available and the parents have to buy the curriculum or construct one with education consultants. (US Department of State, 2018). There are also few bills that would support the home-based education where they would be supported by the parliament. There are also few qualified assessors who are able to create a curriculum for the home-based schools.

Also, the government does not support homeschooling financially or resource wise. However, children with special needs may receive other support from other relief providers such as The Early Intervention. However, the government should also be in a position to provide resources since they are also a responsibility of the taxpayers.

Homeschooling is an important part of learning when children cannot attend school. The children who are under age or are yet to be enrolled get exposed to school curriculum where they learn to concentrate and figure out the various aspects of schools. They also get to learn the basics of schools creating the good foundation for their education life. For the physically handicapped and also children with special needs get to learn and also get the care that they need at the same time in a more friendly and non-judgmental environment. It not only boosts the students’ learning but also increases the parental participation in the learning system. It is also a solution to many problems that children face while in public schools such as discrimination due to the ethnic and racial background, food allergies and also special needs demanded by talent and also other abilities.
