Persuasive Speech Assignment
Criteria Explanation Topic/Approach • A persuasive presentation on a topic relevant to the class, supported with
credible research (no Wikipedia) • Make sure you are focusing on issues within the last sixty days.
Time Limit • 3 to 5 minutes; 2-point penalty for every 30 seconds over or under time limit up to a total of 10 points
Preparation Sentence Outline • A completed sentence outline in the format provided by the instructor • The outline is worth 50% of the speech grade • A copy of the printed outline should be handed to the instructor prior to
the speech. • An electronic copy of the outline should be uploaded to the learning
management system (class website) by 11:59 the day of the presentation.
• The outline should include the Works Cited Required Oral Source Citations • Four (4) good quality sources cited during the presentation through verbal
citations (these need to be in the outline AND come out of your mouth during the speech)
• You must use at least three different types of support (statistic, example, testimony, etc). Label these in your outline
Type of Persuasive Speech • Identify whether your speech is a question of fact, value or policy. Types of Appeals • You need use ethos, logos and pathos in your speech; bold and underline
them in your speech outline Audience Analysis • Audience Analysis is extremely important in this speech. Be sure to focus
on your audience’s disposition towards your topic. Evaluate the degree from strongly opposed to strongly in favor of your audience relative to your topic. Based on this initial audience position, discuss what you can hope to accomplish in your speech
Speech Structure • You should use one of the following organizational structures: Problem – Solution, Problem – Cause – Solution, Comparative Advantages Monroe’s Motivated Sequence
Visual Aids • At least one – use all we learned from infographics – statistics should be visualized.
• If using Presentation Technology, have minimal use of text on slides • You should bring your slides on a thumb drive. There will be deductions if
it takes more than one minute for you to access your visual aid. • You need to refer to the visual aid as part of your speech; the visual aid
should also be relevant to your topic • If using PowerPoint, be sure to insert black slides for when you are not
using your aid Notes • Limited to six (6) 3x5 note cards, single sided, handwritten
• You will be required to hand in your notecards at the end of your speech. Number of Main Points • Two to four, as required by your approach to the speech
• Do not forget your preview (introduction) and your summary statements (conclusion)
Speaking Style/Speaking Outline • Extemporaneous (do not memorize this speech word for word; practice speaking off of note cards) Reading your speech will result in an automatic -20 deduction.
