Make Your Video Look Good = Make “YOU” Look Good
An effective video presentation begins and ends with YOU
01 You should be the FOCUS or the CENTRAL FIGURE
02 Be presentable – Videos feel less formal. Recording yourself from home or the office can give some a false sense of security. • Always appear professional. You don’t
need a suit and tie or to record in a conference room, but avoid sloppy, unprofessional clothing, settings, backgrounds, and visuals.
03
Eye Contact
• When speakers are NERVOUS, they always avoid eye contact! • When you record yourself, try to maintain effective EYE
CONTACT with the camera. • Do Not look at the sky. • Do Not look at the floor.
- Do not STARE at the camera, but your gaze should be focused on the camera, so the viewer feels there is a connection. Look away from the camera only when looking at notes or other items you need to create a successful recording.
Find Your Voice
When speakers are nervous, it shows in their VOICE.
Take a breath.
Speak in a slightly higher VOLUME than you normally use. A slightly louder voice gives the speaker a commanding presence. DO NOT SHOUT – but use your voice to your advantage. On a scale of 1 – 10 , with 5 being normal volume, use a voice volume of 6 or 7.
The KEY to Persuasion… Excitement
You really want to persuade people? Here’s how: Be excited. Be energetic. Be happy. And be knowledgeable.
Viewers, listeners, customers, PEOPLE will always respond to a speaker who shows these traits.
Voice – Create an Effective TONE – Show some EXCITEMENT or you will lose your audience!
If a speaker’s tone is bad – the video is bad, or boring, or
both.
You are creating a video, so the topic must be important
or exciting, right?
Make your tone professional, but also create a tone that makes the viewer want to
watch your video.
”Hi. My name is John Smith. I am going to tell you about my
favorite film.” – ugh – bad tone – I am already bored.
Hey everyone. I’m John Smith, and have I got a great film to talk about. After this video,
you will want to sprint to Vudu to watch it.” – TONE!
If you are excited, your audience will be, too.
Your Appearance
• I don’t place a great deal of importance on physical appearance, but others might. The BUSINESS WORLD does!
• Be sure to appear professional : • Clothing should be appropriate. (You
decide) • Grooming should be considered.
(Comb your hair) • Do NOT appear exhausted. (Be
rested)
Confidence is KEY!
• When speakers are not sure of themselves or the material they are presenting, it shows in a lack of confidence.
• You have prepared, right? • You have studied and researched, right? • You are now an “expert,” right? • Try to create an image that shows
confidence.
• THE KEY? What we have already discussed – proper eye contact, speaking plainly and clearly, creating an effective tone, and physical appearance – are all important is displaying confidence.
The Setting • You do NOT need a conference room or a library or a
personal den to create an effective recording.
• Try to create a professional setting. • Make the space clean and free of distractions.
No weird pictures or props in the background. No piles of dirty clothes or a sink full of dishes. No pets – as they will draw focus off you.
• Be sure the LIGHTING is not too bright. Stay out of direct sunlight.
• Be sure the space is not too dark. We need to see you and much of the space you are in.

The Assignment Persuade Me : Your Favorite Film of All-time is a GREAT movie!
Talk about an easy, fun, and interesting assignment!
You all have a favorite film. If you are like me, you have many.
You only get to discuss ONE, so be certain it is your favorite. Why? Because we are ALWAYS more confident and persuasive when discussing topics we LIKE!
The Basics – Here is What
I Need to Know… the
TITLE of the Film
• The title of the film you will be discussing should be one of the first things you mention.
• If there are several films with the same title (Spiderman), be sure you are clear which version you will be discussing.
• If there are several chapters of the same film (Mission Impossible/Harry Potter/Avengers), be sure you are clear which specific film you will be discussing. • By the way, you are not allowed to use an
entire movie franchise as your “favorite” film.
Date of Release
Tell me when your film was released. If the film was released on-line, you should include this information as well.
Starring??? Who is IN
your favorite film?
• Be sure to include some of the cast of the film. Tell me the stars of the film. How many names you include is up to you.
Plot – What’s this film about, anyway?
Chances are, I will know the film you will be discussing. However, there are many films I have not experienced.
Briefly detail, describe, summarize the PLOT of the film.
Do not tell me the entire film, but you need to discuss the basics of the plot.
Finally, why is this your favorite film?
Here are some common reasons people LOVE
movies… A specific
Actor or the entire Cast
• Actor/cast - people like individual actors – I love Tom Cruise movies, and A Few Good Men is one of his best.
• I love The Avengers because the entre cast is a collection of remarkable actors: Robert Downey Jr., Samuel Jackson, Chris Pratt, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, etc.
Other Concepts
that Make a Film
GREAT…
• Characters – the people we meet are interesting, remarkable, memorable
• Storyline (plot) – the twists and turns, the drama, the humor
• Soundtrack - the songs – the music is vital
• Special Effects – impressive visual impact
• Cinematography – the LOOK of the film – scenery, setting
• The “ending of the film” or the “climax” – I never saw it coming
• The film’s ultimate message – Hope? Despair? Forgiveness? Love? Revenge? Justice? Righteousness? Duty? Honor? Good triumphs?
Why do people
REALLY LOVE a FILM?
The EMOTIONAL connection!
• Most viewers end up loving a film because of how the film makes them FEEL.
• They love a film because the film elicits an emotional response – joy, sadness, pride, laughter, tears, fear.
• A great film can remind a viewer of a better time, of their childhood or childhood memories, of a date, a partner, family, friends.
• Does your film do this? • Many people establish a “personal
connection” with a film and THAT makes it their favorite movie of all-time!
