Unemployment Across the Globe as a Social Problem

Unemployment is the social issue that captures my attention since it is one of the leading triggers of depression and related mental problems, including suicide. Unemployment has a massive influence on the community that is just more than just financial. People have difficulty having any form of income and other challenges to individual physical and mental health. As a result of not having healthy meals imbalanced for lower-class people, some middle-class individuals cannot always afford three basic meals. Society suffers too, due to unemployment from both young people and middle-aged individuals.

Describe what the social issue "looks like" within society

Unemployment has spread like a disease worldwide that even when students at the university study, they do not usually have hopes about securing the job. Unemployed triggers petty and major crimes, especially for the young people, including the likeliness of promoting street people due to homelessness. Due to the incapability of paying rent and affording all the necessities for survival. Apart from financial hardships, unemployment is also the root cause of family tension and breakdown, stigma, social isolation, and decreased self-esteem. For instance, an employed person will also see themselves as a loser, failure, or someone with bad luck that cannot get others' lives.

Due to the stigma, some people end up isolating themselves from the social world and even regret why they had to spend so much money and still not secure a decent job. That is why the majority of the youths around the world are associated with fraud, cyber crimes, and other physical crimes like robbery, burglary, or theft. And making matters worse majority of the victims are learned people whom the government and other responsible bodies have failed to employ. They, therefore, resort to such drastic and risky lifestyles for survival. The social issue affects more males, for they lose respect from both parents, partners, and other close people, and as for the females, it triggers them to engage in prostitution for survival.

Explain how the social issue is a "personal problem" and a "public issue."

I consider the social issue of unemployment as personal since it has happened to my friends, family, and the people I grew up with within the neighborhood. Conversely, the matter gives me a lot of pressure and stress since I am more than sure I cannot secure employment when I graduate, which is why it is a personal problem. It is also common knowledge that you have to have connection from someone at higher ranks before securing work. Or by blood relatives, friends, and other close associates. Secondly, the matter is also a public issue since the unemployed people's lack of finance triggers both physical and mental health, which is why it is a public concern.

The youths and young people are believed to be the leaders of tomorrow, and that is why it is crucial to secure their future for the coming generations. It is a public problem since unemployment encourages crimes and decreased rates of volunteerism keeping the nation at risk. The government spends beyond the payment of benefits to the loss of employees' production, which reduces the gross domestic product, as Khuhawar and Shah (2019) stated. Unemployment as a social issue has developed rapidly, which has plagued many people. That is why the nations must come together and find a long-term solution to curb the social problem.
