Personal statement

I am a business student who excelled in the core units of my undertaking. The courses that I did exceptionally well were business law, accounting, and financial management and business administration. Other than studying business, I have also gone through a multicultural business consulting course which has helped in the building of my networking skills. My desire is to acquire as much knowledge as possible in the field of business in order to excel in the field.

I aspire to further my education in accounting and financial management with the intention of becoming an economist. My love for business and business studies goes back to when I was younger. At the age of sixteen, I started working in a restaurant near our home. In the span of 6 months since I started working at the restaurant I got a promotion from my manager to become an Accounting assistant in the restaurant. My manger saw my enthusiasm for accounting and realised I would be best placed to learn more at the accounts office.

In addition, as soon as I got my first job, I started saving and as a result invested in the stock market in 2018. Unfortunately, things were not as easy as I thought as I lost most of my savings. I have done more research more so on government policies that affect business and investor decision and so far the year 2019 seems more promising; I have so far recovered my losses and by the look of things, I will start making a profit sooner than later. All the above mentioned things have played a significant role in cementing my desire to become an economist.

UW is the key to my dreams. The university through its culture and interactive sessions have natured so many business minds to the extent that they are influencing not only the US but the whole world and I want to be a part of that. I believe UW will offer me the relevant skills and knowledge to become a top economist. UW appreciates diversity and I hope to utilise the university to better my cultural competence as well as sharpen my networking skill all of which are important in my career as well as my personal life.

Fortunately, I have had the chance to live in two continents, Asia and the USA and through my interaction with people from the two continents; I have been able to appreciate cultural diversity. One of the best virtues that I picked while living in Hong Kong is that humility is the key to all interactions. The Chinese emphasize a lot in humility regardless of the position one holds in society. The Chinese culture which I am a big part of has influenced how I live my life; I make meaningful relationships, respect all people regardless of their position and I am a hard worker.

As an immigrant coming from a middle class family, I have experienced my fair share of injustices and difficulties growing up in the United States. My mom and I emigrated from Hong Kong to the United States in 2012, in hopes or living the American dream. It was my mother’s desire that I receive a good education considering that she never had the chance to pursue her education. As soon as we landed in the US, it was very clear for my mother and me that there no short cuts to success; I had to excel in my studies. Just as with any move, our move to the US was not an easy one. I had to learn to write and speak in a language that was not my first language and the change of lifestyle was really difficult for me. Fortunately, everything that I experienced during the move has played a vital role in shaping my character, my personality as well as influencing the goals that I aspire for in life. My ultimate goal in life is to prove that all one needs to do is have a dream and work towards achieving their dream.

I am unfortunate to have come from a broken family; my parents divorced when I was only six years old. The most painful part for me was not knowing that my parents were divorced but seeing my parents try to live a lie to shelter me from the ripple effects of their divorce. My father was a horse trainer in Macao while on the other hand, my mother was just a housewife. My father was extremely wealthy to the extent he owned nine houses. I would be lying if I said that I did not live a spoilt life.

Things changed after the divorce. I got to see the lies and hypocrisy embedded in our family. I, however, am glad that I experienced the hardships that came with the divorce of my parents and the emigration to the US. The hardships made me see that there is more to life than what meets the eyes; I learned that trust is a virtue that must be earned. After the divorce, I went with my mother and I received a backlash for it; everyone was of the opinion that living with my dad would have spelled a better future for me.

One thing that is surprising, the most difficult time in my life also happens to be the happiest time in my life. The divorce brought my mother and me closer. I got to see my mother working really hard even though she had the option not to by using the CSSA (Comprehensive Social Security Assistance), from the government. My mother wanted me to learn the concept of self-reliance. That has always encouraged me to work hard and take responsibility for my life. If there is something that I pray for, I pray that my mother sees me living a successful life in order for her to know that she made the right decision in raising me up the right way. My success will be my way of honouring her.
