Student Name Shine Hong

Outlining Stage Shine’s Feedback

(What to improve?)

Thesis Statement:

The irresponsibility of the city of Halifax described in the National Post,

“Africville residents carry on fight for compensation 47 years after black

community bulldozed in Nova Scotia”, reminds me of how short-sighted

the reconciliation of the city of Halifax with black Nova Scotians was.

This will be made clear through the following reasons: the destruction of

the Africville and the Halifax mayor’s apology.

- A: Key word [noun]

- B: Supporting details (Roadmap)

- C: Overall reaction

- Prompt with quotation marks

Background (One additional source)

1) Context (where/when): Halifax, Canada during the 1960’s

2) Who were mainly involved in the historical event(s) related to your

prompt: black Nova Scotians, Halifax mayor Peter Kelly, Flemming

Vemb (a plaintiff and former resident), The Supreme Court of Nova

Scotia

3) 3~4 Important Historical Facts:

 The residents of Africville were the descendents of former slaves

and slaves who had escaped to Canada (Canadian Heritage, 2010).

 Over the years they built a community close to the city of Halifax.

The city of Halifax made many choices that were negative towards

the community, and in the 1960’s they ordered the residents to leave

their homes and relocated them into Halifax. This was extremely

distressing to many of the residents and had a profound effect on

their lives (Canadian Heritage, 2010).

*** This is just an example, so you will need to have at least 3~4 important

historical facts in your worksheet.

- Relevant information to the prompt?

- Missing citation or quotation marks

or page numbers?

- Sufficient historical facts?

1969 was cleared of its residents and demolished to make room for

industrial development” (Brean, 2015, p. 1).

Body 2 (Assertion key words: Halifax mayor’s apology)

1) Evidence:

“in 2010 then Halifax mayor Peter Kelly signed off on an almost $5-million

compensation deal…“We apologize for the heartache experienced at the

loss of the Seaview United Baptist Church, the spiritual heart of the

community, removed in the middle of the night. We acknowledge the

tremendous importance the church had, both for the congregation and the

community as a whole,” Kelly said. That deal involved no personal

compensation and no admission of liability by Halifax, however, and it led

to discord, with some plaintiffs saying the settlement was signed over their

objections.” (Brean, 2015, p. 2).
