Personal Response Assignment

Instructions

Read the following from Bill George’s book True North: Introduction & Chapter 1-3. You will write a response essay to Chapter 3 (i.e. Chapter 3 will be your prompt for this essay). Chapters 1- 3 are background information. The characteristic/quality you choose will be from Chapter 3.

Write a personal response essay (2-3 pages). This paper should include:

· APA format including Title page (no abstract/no subheadings)

· Introduction (Following the general introduction pattern)

· BACKGROUND PARAGRAPH This is a paragraph about the author. Who is he? What gives him credibility to write about leadership? Find a reference to Bill George online. Use it as a citation in the paper and reference it. (one paragraph)

· The Background Paragraph outlines information about the book author and his theory, and includes a short (1-3 sentence) summary of the reading.

· The background paragraph must include a citation for a secondary source: Using the internet, find at least one additional source of evidence about the author and/or his theory of leadership. You will use this source of evidence in the background paragraph.

BODY PARAGRAPHS : There must be at least two body paragraphs.

· Minimum two (2) or more response body paragraphs that respond specifically to the information in the chapter 3.

1. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE RESPONSE At least one paragraph that describes a personal experience you have had. (At least one paragraph)

· In particular, the personal experience response must include reference to a personal leader (i.e. a parent/teacher/relative/coach); someone that demonstrates the leadership characteristic/quality (From Chapter 3) you are highlighting.

2. COMPARATIVE RESPONSE: At least one paragraph that describes a public leader that exemplifies the leadership characteristic/qualify you are highlighting from Chapter 3. DO NOT use a character from True North but the characteristic/quality is the one you found in Chapter 3. (At least one paragraph)

· Conclusion paragraph.

· References page including a minimum of 3 references that include a citation quoted in the paper, and a reference for the source(s) used in the

· background paragraph: 1 – 2 quotations and references

· comparative response; 1 – 2 quotations and references

The purpose of this paper is a personal response to demonstrate connections with your personal experiences and the experiences of leaders not described in the book. This is NOT a chapter review/summary. Any essay that is not a personal response will not pass.
