Dealing with Crises

Gabriel Maiz

Name: Topic of Lecture:

SECTION 1

1

Point: Hurricanes

Personal Relevance: Hurricanes are a part of tropical life that is completely unavoidable, when mother nature sends one over all you can do is prepare and find safety. Being from Florida, I’m ultimately used to hurricanes, if anything they’re a yearly occurrence to give us a couple days off of school. On the other hand, they can destroy anything in their way, especially those who aren’t prepared or don’t have the given conditions to survive a crisis such as this one. In situations such as this one its important. To keep a clear mind and limit the duress caused by an event, it’s a path that can be taken in many decision-making aspects of life, even possible occurrences in the workforce.

2

Point: Climate Change

Personal Relevance: Like stated earlier, weather disasters are something that are completely unavoidable, and as stated in the video also have enormous costs associated with them, many totaling over a billion dollars. Though it may not be something related to my career, climate change is something that will affect humanity as a whole and changes need to be made soon before they’re irreversible. Temperatures have continued to rise with states like Alaska and Hawaii having their hottest years to date. Floods all over are affecting the economy especially around the Midwest and river lands also costing millions of dollars in repairs. Events such as these must be prepared for as they will affect our businesses all around.

3

Point: COVID-19 Leadership

Personal Relevance: With everything going on with this current crisis were going through it’s all a mess. It’s a never before seen event that is going on globally, not just in the US or in China but the whole world. Many places have come to a complete stop, the economy just about shut down for a period of time. A situation like this is important to gauge for the future, if something like this ever breaks out again, I won’t be a college student, I’ll be a business leader and will have to adapt to survive and keep my company afloat. Many protocols should be followed before and after a situation such as this one whether it’s the maintenance of supplies or the constant disinfecting of company premises.

4

Point: Mental Health

Personal Relevance: Mental health is an idea that has become consistently more accepted in the Modern Era, and nowadays with the pandemic going on it’s the adequate situation for mental health to decline with most of the population stuck at home feeling blah. As Hochwarter stated in the lesson Covid and now the upcoming hurricane season are two thing two push the public into a dark place. It’s important to keep your mind occupied in a time like this. In addition, how would evacuations and sheltering change without adding to the spread of the virus. “Its not possible to stick 10,000 people in the superdome” says professor Hochwarter.

5

Point: Disaster Prep

Personal Relevance: As a business owner there are thousands of instances that can occur, harming your business. It can be physical for instance the damages done from a hurricane, or floods or a general crisis such as card fraud, embezzlement, or even torts. As a business owner you have to prepare for everything and expect the unexpected always and cover your bases because it’s better to be safe than to deal with an even bigger issue later on. This is your business, and no one will take care of it if it’s not you. Always prepare for the worst, many things are unavoidable.

6

Point: Location

Personal Relevance: One of the most interesting things I noticed was that the west coast of the United States was consistently portrayed as safer or a better place to live. One of the charts shown in the lecture had the west coast completely green especially the northern parts of California as well as Oregon and Washington, while the east coast is orange and the lower areas like Florida and Texas contain red. Weather was a big factor in the categorization of these locations, but in my perspective, I feel like it’s not a bad trade off to have consistently tropical weather in South Florida for a couple hurricane scares every once in a while. Even with the weather disasters and the traffic in Miami, I’ll take it over living in the middle of nowhere.

Work/ Life Balance

Gabriel Maiz

Name: Topic of Lecture:

SECTION 1

1

Point: What is everything?

Personal Relevance: When we talk about life, we imagine of having everything, but what is everything? You feasibly can’t have everything, but the first step is establishing that “everything”. What drives you? What do you strive for? For the most part, you’d think people want all kinds of materialistic things but then in reality it’ll develop to work and family life for the most part and its always important to find a balance between the two to have a happy and healthy life because with too much of one, the other will lag behind and suffer. First step back and see where you’d see yourself in the next 5 years, then after that maybe the next 10.

2

Point: Stress

Personal Relevance: Stress is a huge problem in today’s day and age, in all age groups stress can be something that’s easily experienced. Now a days everyone has too much on their plate, whether it’s putting food on the table every day, or coming home to a safe family, in general just surviving to the next day. Now with Covid you can add an extra amount of stress. Not to mention for younger generations the added amount of stress that online classes may add to the life of a teen with added due dates and the lack of consistency expected when enrolling in a course whether college or high school. Adding extracurricular activities may ease the stress or add on to it.

3

Point: Sandwich Generation

Personal Relevance: The term Sandwich Generation was relatively new to me but at the same time it was something I was living my entire life. I was part of the sandwich, with my grandma also living with us and my mom holding it all together. It amazes me how 40 percent of today’s workforce consists of a sandwich generation. Smart companies went ahead and relieved the headache of their workers worrying about the younger and older generations at home with intergenerational care, often leading to optimized results. Another interesting topic related to this as seen in the video is how the US is one of the only countries without a national legislation for family paid leave,

4

Point: Work/Life balance

Personal Relevance: Work life balance is necessary in life to have a great life. As show in the Netflix video, the young workforce understands the necessity of a good balance in life whether they are parents wanting to spend time with their families and tuck their kids in at night, or just a nonparent trying to not burn themselves out. You’ve also shown me how important it is to balance yourself out through the personal aspect you’ve added to the lesson, and how you talk about your son its really amazing how you’re able to do so much for Jacob, while also being a single father. My brother is also on the spectrum, and I know it’s a handful for a working father, and it’s not something everyone can handle.

5

Point: Career necessities

Personal Relevance: As shown in the PowerPoint a flexible work life balance was the number one necessity in a career survey. Now a day’s people aren’t happy working a 9-5 because it gets in the way of life. Life really is like a lightbulb, if you’re on and always working, how long are you going to last? Millennials have been classified as “Generation Go” where ambition and flexibility go hand in hand, even willing to drive twice as long to get wat they ask for. Flexibility is huge. An unbalanced work life balance is what leads to unconcentrated employees, leads to depleted mental health and happiness. More productivity at work leads to better results in and out of work.

6

Point: Dutch Work Lives

Personal Relevance: People in the Netherlands must live amazing lives, their work life balance is almost a 10/10, apart from most probably living somewhere near the water. Only 1 percent of men work over 50 hours and the number of women working long hours is too small to measure. They have over 16 hours a week of leisure time and personal care, that amazes me because how can they expect to work so little and sustain a great materialistic way of life? This life of leisure does increase life expectancy as well as mental and physical well-being. All in all, the most impressive statistic has to be that only a 0.5 percent of the workforce says they work longer hour than they should. That’s a whole nation.

Mental Health

Gabriel Maiz

Name: Topic of Lecture:

SECTION 1

1

Point: The need for perfection in today’s society

Personal Relevance: Being perfect is something everyone wishes for, but sad to say it is impossible. Speaking from personal experience sometimes setting such high standards for oneself doesn’t always have the best outcome. This social increase for perfection is highly impacted by social media as it introduces competition by having to meet society standards. Seeing all these flashy influencers makes you want to be in their shoes whether its for their lavish lifestyles or their body and the way they look. This inability to reach societies standards catalyzes a lower mental health rate and an exponential growth in suicides and psychological disorders.

2

Point: Alcohol, drugs, and suicide

Personal Relevance: Over the years mental health has been known as a serious matter but things have worsened. The current leading cause of death in the US is suicide, but drug overdoses doesn’t stay too far behind. This can be linked to millennials turning to alcohol and opioids instead of seeking help. I was always told while growing up that alcohol and drugs will make you forget your problems, but when the “high” fades away your problem is only worsened. Not only does alcohol and drugs become an addiction, but you are also putting your life in danger by risking an overdose.

3

Point: Emotional Awareness

Personal Relevance: Year by year you can notice society becoming more and more aware of their emotions and those of everyone around them. As generations grow and develop, you can tell those coming are necessarily not as strong minded or opinioned, those from the baby boomer generation have grit and toughness but compared to the millennials which can honestly be considered soft. Currently in these times, there’s daily police brutality all over the United States that in earlier years would’ve probably been something that might’ve gone unnoticed. In earlier times things such as depression or a psychologist may have been dismissed.

4

Point: Mental Health during Covid-19

Personal Relevance: The situation Covid has brought upon us is one of the worst things that could’ve happened regarding mental health. People are stuck in their houses, not going anywhere or talking to anyone and most probably just stuck in their heads with anxiety building up. The fact that there’s no social interaction or just the pure disbalance that this has caused in everyone’s life has been major, and something as major as that can alter the fragile mental state of an individual. Definitely backtrack the progress someone with a constant disturbed mental state has had in recent times, eventually regressed to their previous state. We’re not built to sustain all of this bad news we’ve been receiving.

5

Point: Excessive technology use

Personal Relevance: Technology can have a massive impact on the mental health of an individual, with the constant necessity of receiving a text or notification or need to be needed has now expanded to a bigger social plane where you don’t just have to worry about physical social aspect but your virtual persona as well.

Overuse of technology can lead to health concerns like lowered self-confidence, anxiety, and even poor social and emotional stability. The use of tech releases the same chemicals in the brain as when you smoke, drink, and gamble so it can be highly addictive. Many things such as sleep deprivation and a sedentary lifestyle are health risks that can be associated with a vice such as this one.

6

Point: Lowered mental health

Personal Relevance: Living with mental health issues is nothing easy, and in recent years has been something that has been more globally and socially aware, making it easier to find help. It’s something that can be very frustrating and to a certain point, life threatening especially if you don’t understand why or where these feelings are coming from. There are various ways and with different explanations on why someone may suffer from this issue such as a biological disorder, Neurotransmitters, hormones, traumatic life events, and even inherited traits. This is something that affects hundreds of thousands of people in the United States alone, imagine how many millions it affects worldwide.

Realities in Organized Behav.

Gabriel Maiz

Name: Topic of Lecture:

SECTION 1

1

Point: How Covid affected economy/life

Personal Relevance: Similarly, to other disasters Covid has shut down the economy, but this pandemic has taken it to another level of necessity. Corona virus basically shut the world down, brought it to a complete stop, businesses, schools, government offices everything you can think of was shut down and not operational. After finally getting into a better economic position this pandemic has reset this nation as a whole. It has left everyone flabbergasted we’ve all been left on the same page, delayed. Who knows how long it’ll be till things actually start to open back up, instead of closing down for good like we’ve newfound been so accustomed to,

2

Point: Society during a COVID

Personal Relevance: Society has suffered because of this Covid pandemic, no one is used to the new life were living, social interactions have been negated, it’s now mandatory to wear a mask anywhere in public, I even heard recently. That its recommended to wear masks in your home or even during sexual intercourse. Humans are naturally social creatures, we need some kind of communication, or socializing, its necessary to interact with others. Us being forced in our homes will lead to higher cases of domestic violence, higher divorce rates, and definitely financial angst among a familiar nucleus. Being caged as such will build enormous amounts of anxiety within society.

3

Point: Social injustice during pandemic

Personal Relevance: I think that the biggest thing that has happened during this pandemic is the constant buildup of tension. There’s tension in the air, whether it’s between the US and China because of the data stealing scandal, or the social injustice riots that are forming in our own back yard. Not that I’m against it, but I just believe it was done during the worst time possible. Personally, I believe that in a time like this its best to stick together, to unite as one, and to come together, because we are definitely stronger together. In a time like this there’s no need to put thousands in jeopardy, there’s no need to cause more tension between the people and thise who are supposed to protect us, its best to socially distance for the time being.

4

Point: Unemployment

Personal Relevance: As a college student the worst thing I can think of is me graduating soon to enter a depleted workforce, and its exactly that what is happening. People all around are losing the jobs or internships they had lined up, longtime workers are being let go, and it seems as the unemployment rate seems to only go up. Because of Covid-19 in April alone, the unemployment rate shot up to 14.5 percent, over 20.5 million jobs were lost, that’s close to the amount of jobs that have been created within the last 10 years. Not to mention were already in July, I can’t imagine what the number is at now. The government is just continuously digging itself in a bigger hole trying to create money out of thin air.

5

Point: Revenue loss/ Import and export

Personal Relevance: With Covid Productivity and GDP are at an all-time low, companies are struggling to manufacture or receive inventory. This ripple effect has now begun to affect the United States, the first company to state they would not reach their quarter mark was Apple, with iPhone production being delayed. Small business online sellers as well as big apparel companies are taking a hit, Under Armor reported over 60 million in future losses. American car manufactures such as Tesla and Ford have all shut down. Mail packaging such as boxes can be exposed to Covid too, forcing buyers to take precautionary measures with their deliveries. The US is also expected to lose over 35 billion from Chinese tourism itself.

6

Point: Small businesses affected

Personal Relevance: Small businesses have been affected all around the United States, no matter what line of service they’re in. Personally I’ve seen it happen first hand, just in Tallahassee I know of multiple food places such as the Wells Brothers Burgers and Spear It have shut down permanently, and on the entertainment side some of the well-known bars have closed as The Standard, and Bajas have closed their doors for good. Down in Miami things aren’t as great either, with businesses struggling to remain afloat. My mom’s hair salon isn’t as full as it used to be and even some of the businesses around her such as a computer store and another beauty salon have closed down as well.
