  • Personal Mastery is the discipline of continually clarifying and deepening our personal vision, of focusing our energies, of developing patience, and of seeing reality objectively

  • A discipline of personal growth and learning
  • A continuing process of expanding abilities
  • Focused on accomplishing desired results
  • Approaching one’s life as a creative work

Not limited to competence and skills

Requires spiritual growth and goes beyond it.

  • Continually clarifies what is important to us – Helps to keep focused on why
  • Continually learning how to see current reality more clearly – need a real view of where we are now

  • Possesses a special sense of purpose behind vision and goals
  • Sees the vision as the calling, not just a good idea
  • Sees current reality as ally not the enemy
  • Works with forces of change rather than against them

  • Seeks a more accurate understanding of reality
  • Feels connected to others & to life itself
  • Sacrifices no individual uniqueness
  • Feels a part of the larger process, which they can influence but not control
  • Lives in continual learning mode – aware of individual ignorance, incompetence and growth areas

Resistance to Personal Mastery

  • Cynicism – human potential movement is BS doesn’t work
  • Mistake of converting ideals into expectations – Feel stress when people let them down
  • Personal mastery will be counter productive in organizations which are not properly aligned.

  • It will make organizations stronger because:

More commitment

Take more initiative

Broader and deeper sense of responsibility to their work

  • It will promote greater happiness for employees
  • Bottom line is we want personal mastery because we want it

Why is Personal Mastery rejected

  • It is soft can’t be quantified or measured in terms of impact on bottom line and productivity.
  • Cynicism – from frustrated idealists
  • Will threaten established order of well managed company

True if company not aligned

If managers of company don’t have the will or skills then be fruitless.
