Personal Reflections on your Master of Sport Administration Academic Journey: From Bachelor’s to Master’s Degree

Studying sports management and sports administration has been an exciting journey. The studies have prepared me for a variety of opportunities in sports and I can fit in multiple segments within the sports workforce. I have learnt the varied sides of sports including the business aspects and other areas of professionalism in sports. In general, studying masters of sports administration has served to provide me with deep insights into the sports industry. When compared with the studies at bachelor level, the master’s level is deeper and covering a wide range of issues in both local and international sports environment.

At bachelors level I studied the fundamentals of sports as a business. Areas of specialization included ethics in sporting, sport marketing, sports law among others. The curriculum was broad and focused generally on the entire sports industry. However, at master’s level, the curriculum was not as broad and as a scholar, it was possible to narrow down into few closely interrelated concepts. During my internship, I noted a few areas that need to be mastered and hence, I have been paying close attention to areas such as finance management, ethics in leadership as well as administration of sports organizations in general. I have studied in depth the business side of sports and the legal aspects of sports. I have learnt the important of technology in sports and given the chance, I would now comfortably offer administrative services in any sports organization.

Completion of a master’s in sports will help me serve a number of roles in the sports industry. For instance, I can work as an “Athletic Director, a Sports Executive, a Media Relations Director, a Guest Services Manager, a General Manager, an Advertising Sales Director, a Facilities Director or even an Accounting or Finance Manager” (UC, 2020). This is because I have gained a variety of corporate skills with a special focus on the business aspect of sports.

While studying sports administration, I have realized that I have an intrinsic passion to serve others, and I possess leadership qualities that are very important in sports. I greatly enjoy the business aspect of sports and I strongly feel the urge to contribute towards making sports organizations better organizations for players, sports officials and even fans. I find the study worth the investment and look forward to completing it and graduating to be certified and get the chance to serve in sports organizations.

However, the journey has not been only smooth. It has been associated with a tight schedule to meet all the requirement including capstones, discussions and research works all that need one to commit time to complete. The course content also requires one to commit time to study and understand. Balancing family, work and study time has also not been easy. The cost of the program has also caused me to make expenditure changes.

Summarily, the journey in studying masters of sports administration has been enjoyable and exciting. It has given me the opportunity to gain essential corporate skills that are indispensable in sports. The opportunity has also equipped me with knowledge needed to take up top career opportunities in sports organizations. However, the scheduling challenges, inability to balance work, study and family as well as the cost for the course cannot be ignored even though they are all worth.
