Perioperative Nurse Residency Program Application Packet- Fall 2021
Thank you for your interest in our Perioperative Nurse Residency/Fellowship Fall 2021 Program! The program dates are October 18, 2021-April 8, 2022. The following information provides an overview of the program and instructions on how to apply. Applications will only be accepted until Sunday, August 29th.
The Perioperative Residency Program at Ascension St. Vincent’s has been designed for nurses who have just completed nursing school or experienced RN’s and a desire to work in the Operating Room environment. Current opportunities are at:
● Riverside Hospital: Monday - Friday Days only with call requirement ● Southside Hospital: Monday - Friday Days only with call requirement ● Clay Hospital: Monday - Friday Days only with call requirement
The Residency/Fellowship program is a paid, intensive, full-time, 22-week hybrid training program that includes computer learning, lectures, guest speakers, hands-on skill training, simulation labs, extracurricular assignments, observation opportunities, and precepted shifts on assigned units. The nurse will sign a 2-year training agreement that takes effect on the first day of the program.
A typical orientation schedule for the Perioperative Residency includes 4 weeks (Monday through Friday 0645-1515) of didactic learning in the classroom environment, followed by clinical rotations through each surgical specialty (Ortho- 4 weeks; Neuro 4 weeks; General 8 weeks) and an additional week in our ancillary areas (Pre-Admission Testing, Holding Area, PACU, Anesthesia, Sterile Processing; etc). Nurse residents will train on day shift during the program and be assigned one call shift per rotation. AORN’s Periop 101: A Core Curriculum will be assigned through My Learning to provide the foundation for the training. Nurse residents will be expected to invest personal time to complete readings, required assignments, and class preparations. The program requires a personal commitment and full attendance is mandatory. A passing score of ≥ 80% is required on all tests, quizzes, and assignments.
Requirements for consideration includes: ● Must be eligible for internal transfer per HR policy by October 18 start date (Internal Applicants Only) ● Average score of 3 or greater on your last annual evaluation (Internal Applicants Only) ● Fully completed application packet ● Interview with a panel consisting of Nurse Managers, Supervisors, and Residency/Fellowship Educator
Instructions: ● Complete the Letter of Intent (page 2) ● Complete a written statement in 500 words or less on why you would like to participate in the program ● Submit your current resume ● Submit the Letter of Intent and Manager Form (page 2) to your current manager as notification of intent
and review, and then include the completed document as part of the application packet ● Request 2 sealed or directly emailed professional letters of recommendation (one may be from a current
manager) ● Entire packet (letter of Intent, written statement, resume, 2 letters of recommendation) should be sent
