PERFORMANCEANALYSISESSAY1.doc

Your performance response should synthesize, analyze and draw original, thought-filled conclusions about your viewing of YSU’s staging of the play. Use theatrical terms as we do in class and as used in the text. Even if we have not yet discussed a design element, you should have read about these elements in your text by now.

This essay is NOT asking you to make any sort of value judgment about the written text. DO NOT respond with why you did or did not “get” the story. This is a scholarly response to what you saw on stage so do not use anything from previous readings or viewings of the text.

1. Introduction: In this fully developed paragraph you will set up the who (producing agency), what (show), when (date of attendance), where (venue), and to what extent portion (your seating position etc.) of your response. Make sure to close with a “thesis statement” regarding your viewing/response. (If you don’t know what a Thesis statement is, refer to Purdue Owl.com for reference.

2. Using at least one specific example from Act One and at least one specific example from Act Two to support your assertions, explore ways in which the set design did or did not use flats and platforms to create distinct, identifiable places. And how the set was designed to create distinct places. You should include elements of color, texture, line, mass and the like to round out your analysis. Refer to your text for proper terminology for these design elements. I expect theatrical terms in this essay.

3. Thinking of the overall costume design (including hair and makeup) choose one of the main characters, explore ways in which the design did or did not communicate a sense of the given circumstances for that character (status, occupation, age, character traits, etc). Use at least one specific example from Act One and at least one specific example from Act Two to support your assertions. Refer to your text for proper terminology for these design elements. I expect theatrical terms in this essay.

4. Thinking about the use of light and sound in the play, discuss the extent to which these design elements did or did not create a sense of time and place. Also discuss how they influenced the watcher’s understanding of mood and/or focus in a specific moment from Act One and a specific moment from Act Two. Refer to your text for proper terminology for these design elements. I expect theatrical terms in this essay.

5. Conclusion: In this fully developed paragraph, review your argument and your thesis idea. Make sure to clearly articulate the original, though-provoking implications that emerged from your analysis of the live performance event. (What you thought it meant).
