Guided Response: Respond to two peers by first choosing peers with a different last name grouping than your own. View their multimedia presentation and reflect on how their example relates to the three principles of UDL. Provide specific feedback for the specific example created and how it could be effectively used for instruction.

Checkpoint 7.1
Optimize individual choice and autonomy
Optimizing individual choice and autonomy to me means allowing students to discover their interests. It can be tough for students to understand why reading and math are important, especially at age five. That is why giving students opportunities to choose how they learn can make it more engaging and interesting. Creating spaces where students can see how math and reading relate to a topic they may be interested in makes it easier for them to recognize the benefits of studying and learning. Also, creating the opportunity to make mistakes allows them to learn how to correct and experiment with learning.
-The tools used for information gathering or production
I have seen how giving my students choices about learning centers can completely change their outlook for the entire day. Seeing my students' moods change just from giving them one choice has made a huge impact in my classroom. I have seen that my students gained more interest in topics they felt they had more control over. Also, allowing them to write or draw a picture for me has given them so much more room for strengthening and recognizing their interests. I had used this approach when I taught my lesson on fairytales. I would often give my kindergarten students the learning center they could go to after their guided reading. I noticed how much more motivated they were to reading because they knew they would choose the book. They chose the bookmark they would have, and at the end, they would choose what learning center they would go to. It allowed them to see learning as something fun and not something that they dreaded.
