Ethical leadership is a well-researched concept and can be defined as "leadership demonstrating and promoting 'normatively appropriate conduct through personal actions and interpersonal relations." If we investigate it in detail, we can say ethical leadership is such a practice, which initiates and promotes ideal conduct and appropriate set of thoughts, behavior, actions in every way possible throughout the organization. From the theory of ethical leadership, we can estimate the enormous significance it has in a business organization's decision making. From the short-term perspective, ethical leadership assists in improving employee morale, motivation, and productivity. In the long-term, it makes the organization more trustworthy to its important stakeholders (customers, suppliers), which results in more revenue and long-term success.

 

According to some researchers, "ethical leadership as a concept must include the characteristics of both the moral person and moral manager" (Brown & Treviño, 2006; Treviño et al., 2000). A moral person describes the ideal traits and characteristics of the leader. These traits include honesty, integrity, mutual respect, empathy, truthfulness, among others. While moral manager attribute describes how a person in a leadership position & power encourages, promotes standard ethical practices and ideal conduct within a workplace. It ensures justice and equal opportunity for all the employees and trust among the external stakeholders. "Ethical leaders must be both strong moral managers and moral people "(Brown & Mitchell, 2010).

 

Failure in ethical leadership is not a rare phenomenon and can be caused by both individual& organizational reasons.

In most cases, ethical failure of leadership can be prevented or fixed both by individual and organizational level initiatives. Individually a person should give utmost importance to moral values and principles. From an organizational perspective, enforcing a standard code of conduct and leading by example should be encouraged as far as possible.

According to Google dictionary the word “Ethics” means “Moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity.” Ethics are principles, standards, qualities, and convictions that characterize what is good and bad conduct. Initiative is the cycle of affecting others to accomplish objectives. Ethical leadership is one of the important attributes a leader should have. A leader’s ethics impacts everyone around including the growth of the organization. It is important for leaders to focus on organizational success instead of on Personal Ego. Northouse (2016) highlights five principles of ethical leadership: respect, service, justice, honesty, and community.

An example of ethical Leaders is that they construct people group - Leadership is a cycle, whereby an individual impacts a gathering of people to accomplish regular goals. This definition has an unmistakable ethical measurement, the explanation being, it alludes to the normal goal. A typical target necessitates that the leaders and the supporters concur and work cooperatively with one another. Leaders need to consider their own and adherents’ motivations while running after objectives that are reasonable to both. At the point when leaders and adherents set up suitable terms and conditions with one another, at that point it is imperative that they ought to concur with one another and on the off chance that, they disagree and have contrasting perspectives, at that point correspondence should occur in a compelling and tranquil way. An ethical leader mulls over, everybody's perspectives and interests, they show care towards others and in this manner contributes to the structure of a successful local area.
