W2, Discussion 2: Logical Fallacies Example
First Peer post
Logical Fallacy Exercises:
1. Anyone who truly cares about preserving the American way of life will vote Republican this fall.
I believe this statement is an example of Ad Populum's fallacies, the Patriotic Approach, where they are telling you if you wanna keep your American way of life, Republicans are somehow patriotic and American while Democrats are not.
2. Politicians can't be trusted because they lack integrity.
I believe this statement is an example of Begging the Question fallacy based off they have no evidence that politician lack integrity, but they are assuming all politicians lack honesty.
3. Do the vastly inflated salaries paid to professional athletes lead them into drug abuse?
I believe this statement is an example of False Cause fallacy because their is no cause and effect relationship that exists between professional athletes being paid large salaries and the large amount of salaries being made lead to drug abuse.
My Own Fallacy Examples:
1. My sister told me that in high school, kids are either popular and always go to parties, or they are nerds who have no friends.
This is an example of the Either/Or Fallacy, where a person makes you believe that their are only two choices in a certain situation, when in reality their are more choices. Such as in this example, in high school you can be popular and not go to parties, be nerdy while still being popular, play sports and be popular, be nerdy and still be really good at sports, etc.
2. Not going to college is the best, because you do not have to worry about school work and getting up early. Also, you can hangout with your friends everyday without having any stress while making money at work.
This is an example of Stacking the Deck fallacy because this specific person is listing the pros of not going to college, while not listening the cons of not going to college or the pros of going to college. This is more of a one sided argument.
3. My doctor is overweight, so I don't believe anything he tells me about nutrition, exercising , and improving my own health.
This is an example of Genetic Fallacy because the ideas and recommendations the doctor gave to his patient on how to lose weight, makes the person believe the doctor is wrong because of his origin or weight. This fallacy judges people based off their looks or where they came from.

Logical Fallacy Exercises:
Anyone who truly cares about preserving the American way of life will vote Republican this fall.
This may be an example of Hasty Generalization since it jumped to a conclusion without reasoning.
Since I walked under that ladder yesterday, I've lost my wallet and received a speeding ticket.
This is a False clause because it determines that the first event is the reason for the second.
When the Supreme Court ruled that school officials need not obtain search warrants or find "probable cause" while conducting reasonable searches of students, they violated freedoms guaranteed under the Bill of Rights. If you allow a teacher to look for a knife or drugs, you'll soon have strip searches, and next, torture.
Slippery Slope is the Fallacy this context presents due to the idea that one action will lead to another.
My Fallacy Examples:
Apple is a great brand, which means anyone who works for Apple is a great person.
The fallacy of Division explains this because one is using an umbrella to measure anyone’s Morales or character.
I watched a show where they talked about burning something, so I went to light a car on fire.
This is an example of False Clause due to it falling in line with because of this, now this.
We should all come together and work for ourselves.
I believe he is saying he wants you to quit your job and take a chance on being successful.
