Studies find that students who drink more tend to have lower grades. Therefore, drinking leads to poor student performance.
The consumption of alcohol is a contributing factor to not making conscientious decisions as it has the capability to impairs one’s judgement and may cause them to act irrational. In this study, alcohol consumption may negatively influence students’ academic lives. A severely inebriated person does not have the capacity to study or apply themselves as they should to prepare for an exam or to even comprehend and retain the necessary information. They usually lack the normal coherence or mental clarity making it difficult to stay focused.
Drinking at college has become a ritual that students often see as an integral part of higher education experience. Some students come to college with established drinking habits, and the college environment can lead to a problem. According to a national survey, almost 53 percent of full-time college students ages 18 to 22 drank alcohol in the past month and about 33 percent engaged in binge drinking during the same time frame (NIAAA, 2022).
Students with such habits tend to experience academic difficulties, such as missing classes, getting behind in schoolwork, or even sleeping in classes. As a result, this risks the potential of maintaining or achieving academic excellence.

Correlation and causation
1. As ice cream sales increase, so do drowning deaths. Thus, ice cream causes people to drown.
In this example, the two clauses are independent. Sometimes two quantities may exhibit correlation, but there is no direct or indirect relationship. On a hot summer's day, people may choose to eat more ice cream and go swimming. However, just because ice cream sales increase does not mean they cause people to drown.
2. Studies find that students who drink more tend to have lower grades. Therefore, drinking leads to poor student performance.
In this example, the two clauses seem to be correlated. Excessive drinking can cause concentration and memory loss. Students are more likely to skip class, exams, and studying. Research from Balsa et al. (2011) shows students who drank more exhibited effects of poor quality of learning and lower academic scores.
