“Professional Development Proposal”
Date Due: April 18, 2022
(Revised)
“Exploring Into the Past,Present, and Future of Social Studies”
The purpose of this proposal is to outline elementary, middle and high school social studies to enable students to understand, participate in, and make informed decisions about their world (n.d.).
Social studies content allows young learners to explain relationships with other people, to institutions, and to the environment, and equips them with knowledge and understanding of the past.
It provides them with skills for productive problem solving and decision making as well as for assessing issues and making thoughtful value judgments (n.d.).
The key components of social studies content knowledge include history, geography, economics, civics, and government (n.d.).
The Importance Of Social Studies In The School Curriculum Proposal
Education is an important tool for individual transformation and societal change. Social studies curriculum, for instance, is recognized as a means for promoting human development. It serves as a means through which learners can gain the competencies and priorities for empowering their lives. Policies and strategies may sometimes pose challenges in the actual implementation of social studies curriculum in different educational settings (Atkan, 2018). This proposal recommends the adoption of effective strategies for implementing social studies, such as building proficiency through language, making the curriculum relevant to learners, and gearing up for the future.
2
Establish school-wide iniative traditions that enhance student interactions and school climate (n.d.).
Display character quotes in the hallways, media center, on computer screensavers, school marquee, etc (n.d.).
Encourage your school’s Social Studies committee to develop school-wide curricular projects and activities that emphasize character development.
Involve student government in formulating plans on how to promote character development and civility in the school (n.d.).
Schoolwide Initiative Suggestions
Implementing a schoolwide initiative will be important in meeting the needs of students from diverse groups such as Special Needs, English Language Learners, and Gifted Students. English Language Learners, for instance, can benefit by building proficiency through language. This can be possible when mother tongue-based multilingual education is adopted. Other interventions that are in line with school-wide initiatives include making the curriculum relevant to learners through contextualization and enhancement, gearing up for the future such as senior and middle-level learning, and ensuring that there is an integrated and seamless learning through spiral progression.

Plan for Implementation
All-new myWorld Interactive encourages students to explore their world, expand their thinking, and engage with social studies content (n.d.).
The curriculum is flexible and easily adapts to every classroom.
The curriculum creates active, responsible citizens who can make a difference now with myWorld Interactive (n.d.).
The process for implementing the curriculum will take a step-wise approach, which will involve seven phases. Each of these stages will consume considerable amount of financial resources and time. The process and plan will systematically organize what will be taught, who will teach, and how it will be implemented. Each of the components will influence or interact with other components. For instance, the social studies contents that will be taught will be based on students’ stages of development, such as age, maturity, and cognitive acumen. The plan will include activities such as identification of the problems and needs, establishing a curriculum development team, conducting needs assessment and analysis, selecting content, and monitoring and evaluation.
4
Effective standards-setting efforts involve coupling social studies standards with opportunities for children to learn in developmentally appropriate ways, not just with expectations for their performance(n.d.).
Toward this end, two NCSS documents are invaluable resources: National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies: A Framework for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment and the College, Career, and Civic Life Framework for Social Studies State Standards.
Both formative assessment that enhances student learning and summative assessment of student learning should align with curriculum and standards(n.d.).
Collaborating with the Staff at All Levels
Staff collaborating will be important in convincing teachers and school administrators about the importance of implementing the social studies curriculum. Different collaborative strategies will be employed to ensure that it is successfully implemented. First, a professional learning community will be built. This community comprises educators who work together with the purpose of promoting school achievement. Additionally, I will build trust with all members of the teaching community to assure them that the implementation process benefits both the educators and students. I will also promote a school culture that strengthens collaboration and cooperation among all stakeholders, such as teachers, school administrators, parents, and community members.

Resources related to the Implementation of the Curriculum
The successful implementation of the social studies resources will require the utilization of different types of resources. These include technological, human, and financial resources. Financial resources are the funds that will be allocated to facilitate the purchase of learning and instructional materials and paying of professionals who will be tasked with the process of curriculum development and implementation (Ucus, 2018). The successful integration of the curriculum will also require state-of-the-art technologies such as projectors, computers, tablets, online learning libraries, and books. Assistive devices will also be used to meet the learning needs of students with disabilities.
6
Social studies curriculum help to improve human development(n.d.).
It contains standards that enhance learners’ cognitive, intellectual, and emotional development(n.d.).
Context-specific implementation should be considered
Curriculum implementation also requires goodwill and resources from school administrators(n.d.).
Conclusion
Social studies curriculum plays an integral role in improving students’ cognitive, social, and emotional development. Therefore, such a curriculum should be context-specific since it should meet the needs of both educators and society. The curricular programs related to social studies should be related to various school contexts. This should be done by taking into consideration the capacity of schools’ systems and the goodwill from administrators. Finally, resources should be made available to support the implementation process, especially during testing and evaluation.
