Your first full essay is to be a 500 word (approximately) essay on one of the ten topics selected for this assignment. Your essay is to be informa!ve, relying on a minimum of at least one reputable and dependable news source for informa!on. Your essay should also include your point of view on the topic selected. Your source(s) must be widely recognized and respected sources, not just anyone who posts something to the internet. Please adhere to the following guidelines when wri!ng your paper:� The paper must be wri"en in 12 point type. The essay should be approximately 5 paragraphs in length. Each paragraph should be a developed series of sentences; there should be no 1 sentence paragraphs in this assignment. The paper should be correctly forma"ed according to MLA guidelines with your name and page number in the upper right-hand corner of each page and the four- line heading on the upper le# side of the first page of the paper. The paper should have a clear introduc!on that moves from the general to the specific, ending in the thesis statement. The thesis statement should contain both the topic of the paper and the point of view. The thesis should tell the reader two things: what subject the paper is on and “so what?” For example, consider the following: “A#er the assault and arrest of former tennis star James Blake, New York police are denying using racial profiling in its treatment of ci!zens.” No!ce that this thesis contains a topic (the arrest of James Blake) and a point of view (police are denying use of racial profiling.) Also no!ce that I did not offer my own opinion here, only the direc!on of the essay to follow. You are certainly allowed to include your own point of view in the essay. Do not, under any circumstances offer a thesis that announces intent (This paper will discuss...) or lists what the paper will cover (...by looking at the brain, the nerve endings, and the skin). The body of the paper should contain three or more paragraphs to develop the subject. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence and then offer specific suppor!ng details for that topic sentence. Think of the topic sentence as a kind of mini-thesis. The conclusion should offer a sa!sfactory end to the essay, indica!ng where the situa!on stands now and/or where things appear to be heading in the future. This is a paper dependent on at least TWO outside sources, so you must include internal documenta!on of any informa!on you use that is not common knowledge. Your paper must also include a Works Cited page. Remember that this page must include any sources to which you have referred in the body of the paper, but it may not include sources to which you have not made reference.
