• Definition of problem
Data collection & analysis
• Literature review
• Nature of Data: Qualitative
• Investigation of key ideas and concepts
Design
• Understand the literature/data
collected
• Begin to develop solutions to support
the problem
• combine different ideas
Implement
• Discussion of report and findings
Support & educate
• Through adult learning techniques
begin to inform managers of
complexity thinking ideas
The Problem
• HSE performance requires improvement
• BH is struggling to translate complexity
thinking ideas into practice
• The idea should be easily translatable
Question: How to train manufacturing/
engineering leaders on complexity
thinking?
Training Process…
Interactive activity
• Activities
• Enneagram dialogue
• Human Knot
• Paces 60
Provide two tools: Cynefin
and Enneagram
• Outline how both of these tools relate to the ideas of Emergence and Self- organisation
• This provides a foundation to begin the activity
Introduction to Complexity
- Emergence and Self-organisation
• Conducted through a brief PowerPoint presentation
• The PowerPoint utilises the example discussed in this presentation to better translate the ideas of Emergence and Self- Organisation
• “Complex” diversity, wide variety of interdependent, yet autonomous.
• Complexity Thinking allows us to better understand systems.
• Importance : organizations, organizational change, and leadership.
• Complexity theory can offer insights into how organizations become
more sustainable, adaptive, and innovative (Uhl-Bien et al.).
Complexity thinking/ System thinking
Emergence
• This picture captures a fundamental insight into
complexity and Emergence thinking.
• In the conventional view the observer views the
trees or the forest.
• Understanding the relationship between the
details of the system and the larger view is an
important aspect of Emergence.
Yaneer Bar-Yam, Making Things Work: Solving complex problems in
a complex world, (Knowledge Press, 2005). P. 27
Cynefin Framework
• Helps
managers to:
understand the context heed the warning
signs of the organisation
avoid making mistakes by clinging
to a preferred model
Self Organisation
no internal/external agent is in control of the process
• Spontaneous emergence of global
structures out of local interactions
• Collective process
• Leaders play a crucial role and must promote:
interaction
communication
feedback openness to dialogue
Process Enneagram
• Key tool in bringing people together in a dialogue
• Applicable to settings where there is a disconnect
between:
formal organisational hidden informal network of system
relationships
• an issue can be addressed in 9 dimensions
Activity for the Enneagram Tool
Enneagram Dialogue
• Questions for the 9 dimensions that can guide conversations
• First step: Ask questions about how each person sees the current state of affairs
under 3 headings:
myself this group the issues at hand
• Work on other dimensions
• Key point: agreed ground rules that come from the
Principles & Standards.
Human Knot
Disentanglement puzzle that helps a group learn
how to work together
•Used to illustrate the difference between self-organisation and command &
control management.
