Reading workshop
Step 1- Books
In this step the teacher will prepare a special library inside the classroom using a crate. This is the reading workshop crate and the teacher will pick books at first grade level, for example Pete the Cat, and also easier books as well as more advanced book to challenge the already first-grade proficient readers. Some other books will be various Pete the Cat texts, Flotsam and other wordless picture books. Things like Not Your Typical Dragon for below level readers ages 3-5. For above level readers maybe One Smile could be part of the collection.
Step 2- Standards
1.6 The student will apply phonetic principles to read and spell.
e) Blend beginning, middle, and ending sounds to recognize and read words.
1.11 The student will use simple reference materials.
a) Use knowledge of alphabetical order by first letter.
Step 3- Procedures
The teacher will teach the students how to pick books to read from the library collection. The teacher will teach how to use a reading log to connect with what they are reading. The students will learn how to tell the story they read with partners and with teacher conferences. What the students are expected to due during the reading workshop will be taught and retaught when necessary.
Step 4- Minilessons
One of the minilessons is to take the children to the school library. This is to connect the first grade standard of teaching the student to use simple reference materials. The librarian, like in a field-trip, will teach the students how use the computer, integrating technology, and search the catalog. Also in this minilesson, the students will learn alphabetical order as they look up books by the author’s last name on the easy reader wall in the school library. A second minilesson would involve the teacher and direct instruction. They will teach phonetic principles using the crate mini library set of texts. The teacher will instruct the students how to blend the sounds in words, blending the beginning, middle, and end too.
