Discussion 2 (Boyd)

According to Dr. Madeson, Dr. Frankl developed the theory of logotherapy, and it was intended to address the spritual component of the person. She said there were three parts, freedom of will. will to meaning, and meaning in life. Freedom of will is just as it sounds, we are free moral agents, with free will to make up our own minds. Will to meaning means that we can set and accomplish our own goals. Meaning of life, from my understanding, is the idea that what we see is real, and not an illusion, our our perseption or notion of reality. We have a responsibilty to do our best and achieve our best.

In John 10:10, the Lord says in the second half of the verse"...I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

First, when I saw the word "logotherapy" and the word "logo" I wondered if it was related to "Logos" as is used in John 1 when describing Christ. But I'm not sure of Dr. Frankl's faith or intention, as the article states he survived Auschwitz.

Secondly, the concept of free will, will to meaning, and meaning in life would fit with the words of Christ. He brings life, and those who might have it can have it more abundantly. The entire Gospel plan of salvation is based on the idea of freedom of will. it is not compulsory. At the same time, the life of a Christian does not end when they come up out of the watery grave. Paul writes in Romans 6:4 that the person walks in "newness of life". Just like in every other vocation, what that newness will be, as far as how faithful and how vigerously they will walk, depends on our own will to meaning, We may have life, and have it more abundantly, if we have the will to meaning to do it. Or we could just be lukewarm (Rev. 3:16).

Finally, meaning of life does go beyond illusion and perception, to providing a meaning to life. Jesus promises LIFE. This would have been recieved eagerly to the destitute of the first century. Not only was he promising eternal life, but he was promising a life here with purpose, although not necessarily an easy life. But their lives weren't easy anyway. Now they had something to live for.

In looking at these we can see how logotherapy, the words of Christ, and even a life IN Christ can be beneficial to someone suffering from depression, lonliness, pain, and any number of mental issues. They can find comfort with guidance. Though my own struggles with depression I have leaned heavily on my faith and family.

Discussion 2 (Keith)

Victor Frankel's theory of logotherapy was that human beings were able to endure any of their trials due to having something to live for. In Dr. Frankel's case, he was able to survive the holocaust due to his picturing in his mind his standing in front of a class and teaching again. It was his motivation forward that made it so that he was able to survive every day during his imprisonment.

John 10:10 references the Savior explaining how He came so that man might not only have life but that they might have it more abundantly. I think that means that we might actually live, grow, and help others in a way that makes even trials something wonderful. The hope of the atonement of Christ is indeed something that has pulled many, including me through many trials. He has experienced every moment of our lives. When we are depressed, anxious, weary, addicted, apathetic or just overall gloomy, it makes a world of difference to know that someone knows exactly what you're going through. To me, the idea of being able to live in such a way that I might kneel at his feet and thank Him for that endless gift, helps to push me in a direction that would make my life abundant. I have children that I might teach. I have co-workers that I might inspire. I have a wife that I can love and serve. There is no trial so great that can come into my life, that I can not be a blessing in someone else's.
