The idea behind a government system is to how some type of order and control over a large group of people. When there is no sense of order, standard, or expectation stated to society people tend to do whatever they feel like doing. When there are no rules or codes no one knows what decisions should be made and if it the right one. A government system is extremely important when it comes to the sporting world. If you want to keep the integrity of the sport you have to set guideline and rules for the people to follow. One sporting governance that I believe is top and I can relate to the most is the NCAA. I played lacrosse at the Division I level and now I’m currently coaching lacrosse at a Division I program. The NCAA bases its guidelines and rules based off of their top three priorities, academics, well-being, and fairness. Their priority to academics to have student athletes obtain a college degree, the NCAA takes pride on having over 80% of college student-athletes earning a degree. The well-being has the idea that the student athletes are going to be safe both mentally and psychically. The final priority is fairness that every student-athlete is being treated on the same level of respect and integrity (NCAA.org). In the NCAA they have committees that fall under each Division, I, II, and III.

The NCAA has asked basic set of rules that all colleges have to follow depending on their Division. This is called compliance. Every college sports department has a section and or person who is in charge of overseeing all the teams and making sure they stay compliment NCAA. The rules that NCAA enforce are things such as the student athlete’s well-being. Making sure students are able to balance their academics and athletics. For example, there are things called CARA hours, basically what this is does is keeps coaches from over working their student athletes. Teams are only aloud 4 hours of team elated activities a day. This included practice, film, lift, condition or any other type of team activity. The NCAA protect the student-athletes because they are looking out for the best for them. The NCAA also has rules on recruiting and ways you can sign an athlete to your team. There are many rules that come with recruiting and each sport is different depending on ages and expectations of the recruiting process.

Often when we think of the National Basketball Association, we often get caught up with all the stars that develop and rise every season, or we worry about the constant draft picks year in and year out. The most important thing that is often forgotten is the walks of all lives that come into NBA year-round and carve out a name for themselves and defeat the odds or stereotypes presented about a player from certain countries. A prime example is the NBA’s belief that players that do not play in the United states their whole basketball careers, are thought of as being “soft” players. However in that past recent years players such as Dirk Nowitzki and his proof of longevity and talent capability has paved a way for a massive amount of players from Europe, Asia and Africa to find a way into the NBA and to also have an opportunity to showcase that foreigners can compete with Americans as well. With all of this on Notice for Adam Silver (commissioner of the NBA) & Mark Tatum (Deputy Commissioner of the NBA), it forced their hand to make specific changes and to place NBA scout leagues in Africa, Asia and Europe in an attempt to have a closer eye on talent that is good enough to enter the actual NBA league.

By doing such a thing I believe that the NBA seeks to expand their branches beyond American boundaries, as many in other countries are crazed fans of the NBA. Also, to add to that, most in China and Africa are said to have to leave their countries to play in the Euro league (second best basketball Professional league) in order to showcase their talents and in order to carve out their name. By doing such a thing and creating more platform outside of the US, it expands the talent spectrum of player and provides more options. Another great thing that has been done by governing NBA leaders are the change to one and done rules for collegiate athletes. The change allows for players with enough talent to be able to forgo college if not necessary and join the G-league and work their way through the ranks of NBA experience. Why I see this move, as a big move is because it may be the solution to eliminate player exploitation in the sport of basketball. As of recent, we have seen a great deal of FBI cases involving coaches, players and families of players, playing a money grab game that forces coaches to pay top talents, so that they can play for a college program for one year, improve a record or win a national championship and then have that child then go to the NBA. However during that time in college, the families of those players are demanding payments from coaching staffs, due to the fact that collegiate programs use top players names for Institutional use of drawing in massive money and still claiming that players cannot be paid due to Amateurism. All the steps that the NBA has taken by expanding rules and expanding The league past just America develops a clearer platform that allows many to evade legal issues and creates massive exposure than just two to three ways to become an NBA professional. Times have changed drastically and many rules in different leagues are very outdated and I believe the NBA and their governing bodies are leading a major culture change for all professional sports.
