Geography

Japan is an archipelago that is defined in dictionary as a group of islands in the

same body of water. Japan has four main islands that comprise more than 95

percent of entire population. Looking at a map, Japan is located in the East Asia

and Pacific Ocean. Korea and China are the neighbors.

Economic system

The general business news rates Japan as the third largest economy in the world

after the USA and China. The excellent automobiles of Japan -Toyota, Honda,

Nissan- represent the top quality manufacturing that the country is capable of.

Japan is currently ruled by Emperor Abe which is said to be mostly symbolic, but

culturally representative of tradition and history.

Japan is currently ruled by Emperor Abe which is said to be mostly symbolic, but

culturally representative of tradition and history.

The current Emperor is Akihito. He acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne upon the death of his father, Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito), in 1989.

Business Environment

When doing any business in Japan, always remember that the Japanese bow and

that the Chinese do not. It not good idea to act in a business situation that could

offend Japanese because of a cultural ignorance. Sometimes, best to just keep

mouth shut.

Competition must be very difficult with Korean and Chinese neighbors.

The Japanese stock market in 1990 was 35,000 and now is below 25,000 in 2018.

Education

School year starts in April and ends in March. For Japanese residents, six years at elementary school and three years at

junior high school (total nine years) are required. According to the National Center on Education and the Economy Japan

ranked second in science and fifth in math among 72 participating countries and regions, scoring highest among the 35 OECD member

countries in both fields. Japan’s reading scores, while still among the top ten overall, slipped from fourth in 2012 to eighth in 2015.

Infrastructure

Given the island nature of Japan, the physical infrastructure must be more difficult

with the mountains and volcanoes and the earthquakes and tsunami threats. The

use of nuclear power almost destroyed the whole country in the 2011 earthquake -

further damaging the energy infrastructure

Overview of main industries

The Toyota Prius, shown below, is outstanding product of automobile industry

because it was one of first autos to use energy more efficiently - reducing fossil

fuel.

Summary - strengths and weaknesses

The strength of a country primarily depends on the education and spirit of the

people. Making a conclusion about the good and bad may not be too accurate

without ever having lived in Japan - regardless of how much paper research that

someone does. With a strong educational system, the continued strength of

Japan should continue as long as politicians do not ruin the country because of

their greed - the same problem in USA.
