Overview

For many parents, entering the world of “special education” is extremely daunting. Parents (and all family members) can have a wide range of emotions and deciding what their next steps should be can be confusing. As a teacher, any information you can provide to the families will be helpful.

“Growing evidence shows that children at risk dramatically improve when early intervention and work with families are provided” (Lerner, Lowenthal, & Egan, 2003). YOU are in the driver’s seat. Will you be prepared? Imagine you are having a “Parent Night” to educate parents on a risk factors of a variety of special needs and where to seek assistance if they find them. You will create a PowerPoint to present your findings.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare a presentation that includes the following:

·  Imagine you are having a “Parent Night” to educate parents on a risk factors of a variety of special needs and where to seek assistance if they find them.

· Pick a subject

· Be at least 20 slides

· Include photos and at least ONE video

· Include at least 10 referenced facts on the subject

· Include early warning signs of atypical behavior in the following domains: social/emotional, language/literacy, cognition, and physical development and health. These may overlap. (NAEYC Standard 2b; NAEYC Standard 3c)

· Include at least 5 detailed suggestions for parents to incorporate the new knowledge with their children (1 per slide, at least). Must include information about IDEA and community resources for getting evaluated for special needs. (NAEYC Standard 3d)

· Document the steps parents would take in the state of Virginia from being referred for special education to the first IEP meeting (you can go beyond the first meeting but it must include up to the first meeting) (NAEYC Standard 4b)

· Make sure to include all relevant professionals that should be involved (NAEYC Standard 4b)

· Include at least 5 websites/resources parents could use to provide information and/or support (NAEYC Standard 2b)

· Include a Reference slide (doesn’t count towards 20 slides) for all facts and suggestions that is in APA format. Make sure all facts include an in text-citation.

Think of this from a parent perspective when you are creating this resource. You want to give them something that won’t overwhelm them but will walk them through the information and process and provide support along the way. This should be good knowledge for you as well so that you have the information if and when the need arises. Feel free to get creative but don’t make it so flowery that it obscures the important information.

Citing Your Sources

References Slide(s)

You will have a References slide at the end of your PowerPoint. You will properly cite all of your resources in APA format. Use the following citations:

Virginia Department of Social Services. Milestones of Child Development. Retrieved from

                http://va.gapitc.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Milestones_Revised2014.pdf

Follow this link to learn (do not use this link as your citation) how to cite other sources such as your book:  http://liu.cwp.libguides.com/citapa/books (Links to an external site.)

In Text Citations

You are summarizing the research you read. Do not copy and paste it. Imagine I asked you to read it class, then not look at it and tell me what you read. If you summarize material you read, you add an “in text citation,” which is the author and year in parenthesis.

Example: Props in dramatic play should demonstrate diversity such as different cultures, ages, and abilities (Harms, Clifford, & Cryer, 2005).

You may quote small portions (a few sentences) of research from others, but must denote that by including the quoted material in parenthesis and including an “in text citation.” However, quoted text requires a page (book), paragraph (website), or slide (PowerPoint) in the citation. When you use this in-text citation, it is OK to copy and paste information because you are giving proper credit.

Example: The block center should include accessories. According to Harms, Clifford, and Cryer (2005), “examples are toy people, animals, and road signs” (p. 45). These are examples of concepts of geography (road signs) and families and communities (people)
