Parenting Stiles

Parenting styles play a significant role in the behavior of our children; As parents, we have a responsibility to ensure that our children have a healthy development, so we must be cautious in our parenting style. Negative parenting styles can have negative consequences for our children. I want to compare two parenting styles; Authoritarian Parenting Style, and Authoritative Parenting Style.

Authoritarian Parenting Style: The parents that this style of parenting imposes their will and their authority on the children many times in a cruel way. Children have no right to ask because the answer is always because I say so. Children of authoritarian parents tend to be followers rather than leaders because they are submissive to their parents' rules. They tend to be good students because of the pressure to get good grades. This style instills fear in children and can also generate a lack of internal discipline since their parents exercise significant control over their actions,( Diana Baumrind ).

Authoritative Parenting Style: The parents who use this style of parenting are parents with a rational approach, children have the right to give their opinion, parents see their children as an equal, the idea of the children counts to make decisions including the subject of discipline, They recognize that their children have their interests and views. Children of parents who follow the authorized style tend to have open communication and a relationship of trust with their parents. They have an understanding of how their actions have consequences. These children assume leadership roles, help others and tend to be good students.

how parenting styles influence a child’s behavior in the classroom

Based on the significance of Baumrind’s findings, Mayer and Cobb (2000) conducted research on the interactions between parenting style and emotional development in children, and determined that a parent’s chosen pattern of child-rearing had the power to affect the manifestation and level of intensity of a child’s abilities across four major areas of emotion: Perception, understanding, integration, and management of emotions. In turn, these areas above when conjoined significantly contributed to the overall development and furtherance of emotional intelligence in a child (Goleman, 1998; Mayer & Salovey, 1997; Schutte et al., 2001). Furthermore, Mayer and Cobb (2000) predicted, that based on an individual’s specific style of parenting, he or she could potentially contribute to or hinder the lifetime success of a child well into adulthood (Berg, 2011).

In reviewing numerous studies conducted on parenting styles, including their benefits and implications, it quickly becomes evident that there are extensive amounts of research on the effects of parent-child relationships on a child’s emotional development, as well as across various social contexts (i.e., economic disadvantage, family distress, marital relations); however, there is limited research that specifically addresses various parenting styles and their relationship to pre-school aged children’s emotional intelligence. This study, therefore, will serve as the first to examine the topic

The current study sought to determine the associations between parenting style and the levels of emotional intelligence in pre-school aged children, specifically. Additionally, this study also found to demonstrate to parents and parent educators, the power and importance of parenting practices on the overall development of young children. Just as environmental, social, and genetic factors affect aspects of development in children, there are also familial factors that can have an equally significant impact.

Explain how modifications in parenting can create a positive family environment.

Changes in parenting can help children and parents to make their families better and also ensure that children grow up to be successful people. Changing a parenting style or adding other methods to the style can guarantee that one instills all the right qualities to their children and this helps the children in their day to day activities (Oliver, Guerin & Coffman, 90). When both parents and children can communicate effectively on anything affecting the family, it brings the family closer, and they can face anything together or individually. Each parenting style has a disadvantage as none is perfect. Therefore, adding some ideas to the method in use strengthens the method. This ensures the children are given the best parenting that will be of guidance to them all their lives and they might pass it down to other generations (Grobman 73). Parenting is not easy, and it requires patience and contribution from all parties involved. Parents should also ensure that their parenting styles can help their kids stand on their feet and make decisions on their own.
