Paper Two--EXPLAINING A PROCESS--3-5 Pages, Double-spaced

Please have A Primary source, and TWO Secondary Sources.

Your task for this paper is to explain a process to a workplace audience. You must choose your own subject matter. You may, for instance, choose to explain the process of operating a type of machinery or a computer program. On the other hand, you may wish to explain a specific procedure, such as the process of following a new safety regulation or how to interpret a new company parking policy. The idea is to stick with a subject/process you know well and can write about with authority.

NOTE: This paper can be viewed as part of the “solution proposal” in your final project.

You must set up a format that works for your audience and subject. Use these guidelines as a general format:

ONE Introduce your process with an abstract—-an introductory overview of the process and why it is important to follow this process. This gives the necessary background for the reader to understand why this is necessary. For example, if you are going to write about a safety procedure, the abstract generally defines what the procedure is and why it is necessary. The key word here is “general.” You are not yet into specifics.

TWO Give a brief summary of the process itself. You want to reveal, without getting specific, the complexity of the process and how much time it will take to complete. Here, if the subject matter calls for it, you may wish to list what equipment or special training the reader will need to complete the process. For example, you might explain that the procedure is very complex and follows 14 steps that require at least a complete to complete.

THREE Explain the process itself, step by step.

FOUR Write the conclusion. Here, you might ask the question, “What are the consequences if the process is not followed to the letter, or if it is ignored altogether. Stress the main ideas and the reason for the process. The conclusion’s purpose is to emphasize again why the process is necessary and what it is all about. This is your last chance to give the reader a clear understanding.

Remember—-this is an especially audience sensitive assignment.

Final Project: Defining a Problem and Proposing a Solution.  This takes the form of a proposal and an argument, and the assignment has two parts--written and oral.  For this you might propose a new program, or perhaps a change in strategy involving some aspect of your company division.  You must explain your idea, support it, and defend it.  The challenge is to convince an audience that your idea is realistic and doable.  This might also take the form of a grant application in which you are proposing to accomplish something, solve some problem, or start a new project. But in order to solve that problem or start that new project you have to have money and a plan.

So, your final project has two parts. ONE: Define the problem or the project. TWO: Define the solution to he problem or how you will go achieving the goals of your project.

I will ask you to hand in an annotated bibliography with this assignment and make a five-minute oral presentation the last week of class.  Your written report will complement the presentation and must be turned in.
