Topics for Midterm Paper

INSTRUCTIONS:

In response to one of the following two topics, write a 1150-1200 word argumentative paper.

TOPICS:

1. In chapter 1 of his book The Professional Ethics Toolkit, Christopher Meyers defines a professional as “an expert who is skilled in the provision of vital services and who retains a normative commitment to his [or her] clients’ well-being” (p. 15). In the rest of the chapter, he goes on to make several points about the history of professions (section 1.1) and how they are structured (section 1.2). His main point is that the history and structure of professions contribute to make it the case that “trust is the default” for professionals (p. 15).

In the first part of your paper, explain a few (2-3) of Meyers’s most important reasons for claiming that trust can be the default for professionals. Then, provide your own argument for whether Meyers’s argument is a good one or not. Focus on one particular part of Meyers’s argument. In your own argument, you should mention how one of the other readings from class relates to Meyers’s argument. For instance, you could explain why one of the other authors would disagree with Meyers. (See the below instructions for the structure of your paper.)

2. In his article, “Professional Responsibility: Just Following the Rules?,” Michael Davis says that his “thesis is that following ‘the rules,’ while not all there is to professional ethics, is generally enough for responsible conduct” (p. 13). In the first part of the body of your paper, explain Davis’s main argument(s) for his thesis. Focus on just a few (2-3) points he makes. Don’t waste time explaining each of the types of obedience he describes.

Then, provide your own argument for whether Davis’s argument is a good one or not. Focus on one particular part of Davis’s argument. In your own argument, you should mention how one of the other readings from class relates to Davis’s argument. For instance, you could explain why one of the other authors would disagree with Davis. (See the below instructions for the structure of your paper.)

Structure of Paper:

Whether you are writing on topic 1 or 2, your paper needs to include the following features:

1. Brief introduction, including thesis statement (one paragraph)

2. Explanation of Meyers or Davis’s argument (1-2 pages)

3. Own argument as to whether Meyers or Davis is right or wrong (1-2 pages)

a. If you are arguing Meyers or Davis is right, begin this section of your paper by considering how a different author we have read would object to his argument. Then, respond to this objection. Focus your response on one or two points.

b. If you are arguing Meyers or Davis is wrong, begin this section of your paper by jumping right into your own argument. Focus your argument on one or two main reasons and connect at least one of your points to a different reading from class.

4. Brief conclusion (one paragraph)
