Thesis: The path of US globalism began with the Spanish American War and was solidified with other world-wide military conflicts, such as World War I and World War II, which eradicated our previous isolationist policies and demanded we play a larger role in global politics to maintain peace.

We can see the path of US globalism by analyzing four key events, the Monroe Doctrine, the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II. In each instance, the US is pulled onto the global stage as they create new policies to adapt their foreign policy.

After the Spanish American War, America felt it was their duty to provide democracy and freedom to other, “lesser” countries. For example, when speaking about the independence of the Philippines, future president Wilson wrote that they should have self-governance when capable. , “our work is done and they are ready.”[footnoteRef:1] (Gorn, 109) Wilson’s assertion that the Philippines needed to be “ready” is a clear example of Americans asserting their ideologies on to other countries.
