PREPARING THE PAPER:
1. Review Chism text, Chapter 9-11. 2. Nurses seeking a doctoral degree need to be aware of current and future job projections for
their specialty. The role of the DNP is evolving over time. Research the various facets that
affect this evolution. Apply findings by discussing personal short and long term career goals.
You may choose to include national research on educational and job projections for DNP
prepared nurses, information from accreditation bodies and information from the Nurse
Practice Act in your particular state.
3. Formulate a personal leadership philosophy. If you have a background in teaching, this may be similar to your teaching philosophy. However, in this endeavor, you will explore who you
want to be as a leader in education. What are your values and how do you want to
incorporate them into your practice to improve outcomes? Through scholarly inquiry, support
your personal philosophy with a theory or framework from nursing or another discipline.
4. Obtaining a doctorate degree in nursing can often open up new career opportunities. Being prepared to market oneself as a doctoral prepared nurse is an important step toward success. To help in this preparation, examine various local and national organizations that may have
career opportunities for someone with a terminal degree in nursing. Discuss how you could
network through these organizations to facilitate your success. Explore barriers you might
face in meeting your goals and possible solutions to these barriers.
5. Write your Curriculum Vitae (CV). You may select a template of your choice provided the appropriate information is provided. Utilize the grading rubric for details.
6. Summarize your professional practice plan in the conclusion to your paper.
