INDIVIDUAL ANALYSIS MEMO

This memo represents your analysis of your communication leadership behavior. Imagine your new boss requested you attend a communication leadership seminar to help you better understand your communication leadership tendencies. Now, your boss would like you to communicate what you learned to him/her, so he/she can know you better and understand how to leverage your strengths within the organization.

At the conclusion of the seminar, your boss asked you to write a memo that articulates two of your communication leadership weaknesses and two of your communication leadership strengths, and describes a specific situation in which your communication leadership behavior will have value in the organization. You should assume your boss is not familiar with the leadership approaches, theories, and assessments you completed at the seminar (i.e., in class); although, this person does not want much detail – just enough to put the score in context.

Other Details: Your future supervisor is your audience for this memo. The memo should be one-page, single-sided, typed, and single-spaced. Also, your memo should be in correct memo format with one-inch margins and 12-point font.

Structure: Your memo should have an introduction that includes relevance, thesis, and preview statements.

In the body, you should address and describe two weakness and two strengths of your communication leadership as indicated by your scores on the communication leadership instruments. To support your claims about your strengths and weaknesses, provide data. These data should consist of 1) the results of appropriate leadership assessments and 2) real life examples. To bolster the strength of each claim, you should provide both types of data (i.e., assessment score and example). When including assessment results, specify your score/s, how many points were possible, and what each score means.

Finally, describe a specific (hypothetical) situation in which your leadership behaviors may be of value in the organization. The specific situation you describe should flow logically from the strengths and weaknesses you described. That is, the situation should leverage your strengths and downplay your weaknesses. For example, imagine you claimed your strengths are in team management and listening, and your weaknesses are in long-range planning and managing abstract concepts. In this instance, you should describe a situation that allows you to lead a team and use your listening skills. The situation should not require long-range planning or dealing with abstract concepts. You should explain how the situation mitigates your weaknesses. (Note: This section should be the final paragraph in your memo. Do not include an additional conclusion.)
