GPP 115: Prompt for Term Paper Due: Tuesday, November 26th
• Paper length: 8-10 pages (2000-2500 words) in 12 point, Times New Roman font with 1” margins, double spaced. • The paper must be properly cited and all sources noted. Please refer to your section syllabus for your GSI’s preference on citation, submission format and use of sources. • Plagiarism will not be tolerated and a student may “receive a reduced final grade or failing grade in the course” and may also result in the student being reported to the Center for Student Conduct per UCB policy. All papers to be scanned with Turnitin.
Topics Choose one of the following four categories of research and discuss how it fits into the global economy and whether it has created wealth or poverty, equality or inequality. This paper should address the questions of 1) “did it reduce or increase poverty?” and 2) “did it reduce or increase inequality?” The paper should address the prompt through the use of a case, or object of study. (Scale of case study can range from a specific commodity, NGO, institution, or location, anything from Lagos to Beijing and the polar ice caps!) The themes you write about should be related to the class; you may write about a key theme or themes listed here but are not limited to these. Strong papers will show original thought and critical analysis.

3. Commodities / Trade Key Themes:
● WTO, NAFTA, or free trade ● Import/Export, and Protectionism ● Agriculture Business/GMOs ● Consumerism/Sustainability ● Labor/Exploitation
4. Microfinance Key Themes:
● Washington and Bangladesh Consensus ● Microfinance Industry and Poverty capital ● Feminization of Microfinance
