Your Name Your Professor’s Name The Class

The Date

Title

This is how your papers should be formatted. The heading is where you type in your name, professor’s name, the class, and the date in the top left corner of the first page. Do not put this information in a header. You may put page numbers in a header, if you know how, but it is not required. You should give your paper a title: It should be a descriptive title, not a cutesy one. Remember that unpublished titles (yours) are not punctuated.

You should use a Times New Roman size 12 font. Margins are an inch on each side, as well as top and bottom. Most Word programs will do this automatically. The first line of each new paragraph is indented 5 spaces; usually, pressing tab will do this automatically. The paper should be double spaced throughout. To set the paper to double space, go back to the small arrow at the bottom right corner of Paragraph on the toolbar. When the dialog box comes up, choose double space where it says “line spacing.” Or, look for the spacing icon on the toolbar and choose 2.0.

Do not skip extra lines between paragraphs; just double space throughout and indent the first line of a new paragraph. Be sure to meet development requirements: Is this a single paragraph writing assignment or an essay? A single-paragraph writing assignment should not be longer than a page (shoot for ¾ of a page for an academic body paragraph); an essay is multiple pages consisting of an intro, at least two body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. If submitting a hard copy in person, staple your paper in the top left corner, above your name, before coming to class.

Attach a Works Cited page may be required. If so, when you get to the end of your essay, go to Insert and choose Page Break. That will begin your works cited page on a separate piece of paper but still keep it as part of your document. The title, Works Cited, should be centered and not punctuated in any way. The citations should be in alphabetical order, double spaced, with hanging indentions. To make a hanging indention, go the small arrow at the bottom of the Paragraph box. When that box opens, in the middle section title Indention, use the pull-down menu to choose Hanging. Click apply or OK.
